Kosch
Hi All, Got a Mya Gelato for free from hookah-shisha.com when I bought my KM Butterfly. I have no problems with the KM, but the Mya Gelato is always harsh. I've been through maybe 8-10 bowls since I got it. I'm just using the bowl that came with it. I've tried it extra loose, slightly packed, various levels between. Room temp water, cold water, ice water, different levels from 1/2" to 1.25" above the stem. I'm using square Coconara coals. I've tried 1 coal, 2 coals, 1 coal split in half. I know this wont compare to my KM, but it just seems unusable. Also, I'm barely getting much of a cloud or flavor at all when it's harsh. A decent cloud and bit more flavor and it's extra harsh. I've made sure it's extra clean and am using filtered water. Anyone have any ideas? I'm about ready to pitch this sucker out the window! Thanks! Kosch
Epoch
If you're using a different bowl with your KM and it's working, just stick that bowl on your Mya Gelato. I'm not a fan of the Mya stock bowls.

I'd suggest using the same hose too.
mushrat
i like the standard Mya bowl soo.... Check the purge valve. make sure the ball is in there and isnt stuck open. Make sure the hookah is air tight. An air leak can cause the coals to burn the bowl due to lack of air flow and the fact people keep adding coal thinking thats why they are getting crappy smoke volume. A hookah is a simple machine. if its air tight and working properly what works on one hookah should work on another.
Stuie
Is it harsh or does it taste like a hobo's boxers? Those Econo Mya's are awful. I have had 2 econo gelatos and they never tasted right. It's the aluminum Stems. If it is truly just harsh Pack more tobacco and back off the heat. Mya Bowls smoke great once you learn to pack them. Chreees
If it's the Econo model, as Stuie mentioned, then that's probably the reason why... I got my friend one (hey, it's what he wanted!) and the smoke was harsh no matter what. On my KM and Al Nawras, it was just fine. Sorry, man. Always take the discount, not the free hookah. mushrat
i still dont believe it has anythign to do with the hookah itself.
Chreees
Only reason I'm thinking it's the hookah itself is because he said the KM is fine. Without this bit of information, I would not have come to this conclusion. Just reread the part of Stuie's post where he asks for for clarification between harsh or hobo's boxers... I want to state that with my friend's Econo QT, the smoke wasn't harsh as if the bowl were being burnt, but rather it had this weird, twangy, harsh thing going on... if that makes sense. I guess you could say hobo's boxers can be an accurate description of the feeling. Either way, I agree that it is due to the Econo's shitty materials used. Mya should discontinue the Econo hookahs... He Osnt sing the same bowl on each hookah the mya bowl is easy to mess up but easy to pack. The Egyptian bowl is harder to mess up on though. I have a YouTube video on how to pack a mya bowl. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E_yWzBhkg2E&feature=youtube_gdata_player
Chreees
Ohhhh, he's using different bowls with each setup? I thought he was using the exact same bowl and hose, just a different hookah... Nevermind then.
Kosch
Hey All, Didn't get back to check this until just tonight, and wow, thanks for the responses!! Okay so to answer some questions: - Yes I am using different bowls on each. I hadn't even thought to try the bowl from my KM (actually a Vortex bowl). I will definitely try that. So much for scientific method lol - It is most definitely a harsh smoke, not hobos shorts lol. It burns the throat but doesnt taste like much. I haven't noticed the aluminum taste but I was worried about it as I could smell the metal when I got it. - I can't actually get the purge valve to close 100%. I even take the cover off and put pressure on the ball, and it still leaks ever so slightly. I also tried an airsoft BB, no go. I guess I may have to take a closer look and see if it needs reaming or something. - It is in fact an Econo model What sucks is I really like the look of it, well at least the vase. I was planning on buying a new bowl and hose for it, maybe I'll still give it a try. If not, I guess I'll just need to buy another hookah.. ahh shucks, not another Oh hey, @Chreees, you mentioned taking the discount? I'm not sure I knew they offered a discount instead of the free hookah. I was going to be placing another order soon and going to get the free Egyptian Furat hoping it would work better than the Gelato, but maybe if I can just take a discount and put it towards a better model... hmmmm.. Well thanks for all the help! I'll try changing the bowl, hose, ream or stuff the purge valve (insert perverse comment here), and see where that takes me.. Thanks! Chreees
Yeah, you can use a discount code with H-S, but it takes away the ability to get the free hookah. HF's discount code for 15% off there is "Hookah Forum". Here's the list of discount codes for you: http://www.hookahforum.com/topic/5876-all-discount-codes-for-online-customers/
mushrat
From what i understand, they started the econo line to compete with the large number of light, cheaper, aluminium rip offs that were coming out of china. They decided if people wanted a lighter cheaper version of their hookahs they might as well get them from the source. I sold the early econo qt and gelato, and i have friends who still have them that say they work fine. Go figure.

All the parts are fused together and the metal finish is peeling off, though.
joytron
What would make sense is that there is a leak and therefore the clouds are much smaller and he is using extra coals to compensate.

Kinda like how I use my favorite red/black Tangiers Mini Phunnel on all three of my hookahs.

Kosch
Hey All, Sorry for slacking on the reply. I did my "experiments" shortly after this thread, but got sidetracked and yeah just forgot to reply lol. So, I took took the bearing in the Gelato, wrapper it in saran wrap, and sealed up the purge port completely. From what I can tell, the hole just isn't drilled well, so even if I put pressure on the bearing, it doesn't seal. I also used my KM hose, and the Vortex bowl from that I got for my KM. Overall, it was definitely a better experience. However, it just still didn't feel "good". Still on the harsh side, maybe a heat issue? Clouds were better, but it still seemed like I just needed too much heat. I dunno, maybe this one will just sit on the shelf. I really like the look of it. I've just been sticking with my KM now. Doing a H-S order soon, so I'll get the Furat with my order and see how that goes. Thanks for all the help! Cheers, Kosch
