Anyone Know The Point Of Using A Flat Bowl?

Recommended Posts

Yes, skeetsak, that's exactly right. In Arabic it's called 'Ajami, in Turkish, tömbeki. You can't use them for tobacco like Salloum, Zaghloul, etc. The fact that this is what all nargiles used for hundreds of years is why none of the native hookah-smoking languages call the thing that goes on top "the bowl"

The wrapped version looks like this:

And this is the cigar-style, wrapped more neatly from whole leaves (this was about 8" tall)

There's also a style where they shred the leaves up, and pile them on top, but I can't find a pic of that.

Re: how does the different wrap affect it? Not sure, haven't smoked it enough to know.

But let me say that every time I've had it (in Lebanon only, where LOTS of people smoke it), it's pretty much sucked. Imagine a poor quality cigar with weaker yet very rough smoke and a much bigger kick, and you're close to it. I could only take 15-20 minutes of it, with very intermittent puffs. It's very different from "black" mu'assal like Khan al Khalili, Zaghloul, Salloum, etc, which in my opinion are much nicer by comparison.

Interesting, I think a while back mush made a thread of doing that process, didn't know the flat bowl is what it was made for, thanks!

I third.

Also, what's the best way to smoke traditional tobacco? I've only done it once (in Israel, and I would love to again) and a search netted me nothing useful. I'm probably not typing in what needs to be searched.

Found it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7NHiMrUeVQM

Turns out that mush is filming and someone else is packing the bowl.

Yeah, it was mentioned in the video comments. I think the proper bowls weren't readily available so they used what they could.

And just a thought, isn't a flat bowl called a plate? ha!
