Is there a difference between animal glycerin and vegetable glycerin when it comes to adding it to shisha/making shisha?

And could I purchase it at my local qfc/bartells/target or would I need to go to a different place?

The biggest difference is purity and lastability. Get vegetable.

Animal Glycerin:

made from animal fats, such as tallow, grease, or lard

cheaper to make

usually not purified
Vegetable Glycerin:

will not become rancid or ferment

does not dry as fast as animal glycerin

is food grade and therefore has more uses
Both:

thick, clear, odorless liquid

may act as an emulsifier and humetcant (draws moisture from the air)
I have found vegetable glycerin at the chain store hobby lobby, I'm not sure if it is harder to find for people, but in the area I live that was one of the only places I could find it.

All I thought of when I saw animal glycerin was, "I wanna smoke a lion... or a tiger!"

Vegetable glycerin sounds like the way to go based off of what Ty said. I'm mainly saying this because I have no idea personally.

You can also make some neat super bubble solution with glycerin. Just add a bit (about 1 oz) to a solution of liquid dish detergent and water. You can use a string tied in a loop and make a bubble a couple of feet around and 10 feet long. Yeah, I'm really 12 years old -- in my mind.

The difference is the base glycerol. If it is vegetable glycerin. It is vegetable based glycerol. Animal fat or chicken fat is popular as glycerol as well. Is there a difference in glycerin quality? No.

Two things you must know.

1. Make sure the glycerin is labeled USP. This means it is certifed for food use. Ask for the COA and if it is kosher, ask for the kosher certificate. The info on the label on the container must match the certificate, and it should not be a 3rd prarty transfer label. This way you are protecting yourself from folks are repackaging the stuff in their garage.

2. Know your source if you are buying online. If you produce a bad product, it is your responsibilty to know your food grade product sources if you are sued. There was recently some toxic glycerin usp found on imports and flagged by the fda in july. Google "Jatrophia Seed Glycerin Warning" and You can find lots of articles about it. The fda clearly states to know your source. So stick to american made, to protect your ass if you get sued.

Follow these 2 rules and you are fine.....
