Shiazo Stones - Harsh?

Recommended Posts

Hello!

First post here so I guess I will introduce myself first and foremost.
23 years of age, lives in Sweden and newly hooked on hookah :)

I have a small problem with my shiazo stones.
Everytime I smoke them I get soar in the back of my throat, however when I smoke real tobacco I have no problem at all (using the same setup for both)

This is the hookah i use http://www.vattenpipan.com/produkt.php?i=745 (couldnt find it at an english site, sorry)
And these stones: http://www.vattenpipan.com/produkt.php?i=867

Tried filling the head with different amounts, tried different coals and different amount of holes in the foil. Nothing seems to help me get rid of the harshness.

And from what I can tell from the reviews, noone else thinks they smoke harsh? Or am I missing something?

Thanks for the potential help!

I've not tried the shiazo stones. but I've tried the Xhale brand of steam stones.. They tend to get very harsh in the back of my throat, but only after 20 or 30 minutes.. how many and what kind of coals are you using?

Are you making sure to thoroughly mix the stones with the juice? Also there is no need to add more juice to the bowl if the stones have been mixed.. there will be some juice leftover and you can mix the used stones back in.

Yes they are mixed and ready!
Butik could it be its just too hot? Last bowl got a little harsh but nowhere near ås harsh as it use to be. This time i put the coals almost half over the edge

From using the stones myself, I don't understand how they could be getting harsh for you... They can take a lot of heat. Actually, I tend to use one entire coal more when vaping the stones.

Only thing I can think of is maybe it's the bowl you are using? What kind of bowl are you using? Phunnel style works best with the stones.

As coyote has said, there is no need to have excess juice in the bowl. That would most definitely cause an uncomfortable harshness. If this is not the case then your issue is probably the type of coal and/or the amount of coals you are using.

Ive been using the bowl that came with, however i should be getting my phunnel bowl tomorrow :)

Its not impossible that there were too much fluid in the bowl though.. Hopefully more trial and error will solve any issues. Thanks for the help guys :)

If you were using the bowl that is in the picture on your hookah, ur coals are drying out SUPER fast because there is no where for the juice to stay its just falling down into your hookah, because the rocks aren't absorbing in liquid its just sitting on it so ur probably burning the top then thats it. so wait till you get ur phunnel bowl ten let us know.

Yeah I think it might be the bowl...

Hi again!

So I finally got my phunnel and I have tried it. Only once with shiazo so far though but no harshness :D
However the clouds I got was smaller that with the standard bowl. Ill use 3 coals next time and expect awesomeness.

Also, as a sidenote, the tobacco has been tasting better (read more) with the phunnel :D

We have found that Carbopol Ring Charcoal is the best charcoal to use for Shiazo. It is virtually tasteless, has the lowest percentage of carbon monoxide emissions, and burns at the perfect constant temperature.

Had the same issues with harshness the last time i tried shiazo, needs quite a bit of heat to get some clouds -> that's when the harshness comes. Gonna try to use less juice next time, if i remember right i intentionally tried to add a decent amount of it, because i thought it would help produce clouds. Actually, i'm going to try it right now (dammit i wasn't even supposed to smoke tonight...).

Well, had a few sessions with blueberry and raspberry - It works, but the clouds are barely decent at best, regardless of heat management and packing/amount of juice etc (using a phunnel). Flavor is also decent (at best), all the flavors ive tried has this perfumy touch to it (and not in the good flowery "AF-rose-way"), which is pretty disappointing. My opinion is that its not even remotely viable as a substitute to the regular tobacco-shisha like AF/nakhla/tangiers etc (nobody really expects that either but...). If you are "allergic" to tobacco, well, then it works, its certainly better than the soex ive tried, but otherwise its pretty pointless.

Like I have previously said, any excess juice added to the bowl is simply overkill and will certain cause an uncomfortable harshness. By adding excess juice, you are attempting to boil it instead of steaming it out of the pores of the mineral. Edited by Shiazo
