Well, for some reason I've got a hankerin' to get ahold of a nice board game collection to alleviate boredom. Right now, we've got Twister (which doesn't work well with a hookah), and this Pirates card game (which I haven't played, but am planning to tomorrow night). Other than that, I'm stumped. A few of the games I've been looking at are:Heroscape Master SetPirates of the Caribbean Battleship (already have the original, looks like a fun version)Munchkin (another card game)Axis & AlliesRiskRisk 2210MastermindPictionaryMonopoly (of course)That's whats on our list at the moment. Any suggestions? We're looking primarily for card games that are pretty easy to play, strategy games (obviously), and really anything that's hookah-friendly and promotes more than just staring at the TV and going "Wow, dude...nice kill."Two I see mentioned often are Settlers of Cataan (and I noticed there's a few other Cataan games), and Carcasonne. Any other suggestions for me?

I think we have Scrabble, just not in the apartment atm, but Yahtzee and Trivial Pursuit should be on the list as well. And they have been added. My brother in law got the Star Wars Trivial Pursuit for Christmas last year, and they all quit playing it after 20 minutes after it was clear I was the only one who could understand the questions, lol. Also, I run the board at Scene It.

I definitely recommend Settlers of Cattan. Get the Original version, and maybe later on an expansion. It's a great group game even if you aren't into strategy games. Carcassonne is also good but I've only played 2 player, and I prefer Settlers. Heroscape takes up a lot of room and takes a long time to set up. I've only played it a few times but it was original and fun.A pretty fun and easy card game is Apples to Apples. And a game of Risk 2210 would probably take about 8 bowls of shisha to finish, I heard it's pretty long. For an awesome board game site, go to boardgamegeek.com

You named some good ones.Apples to Apples is pretty common - even Barnes and Nobles carries it. I think it's pretty fun though I had some friends in college that LOVED it.I second the boardgamegeek.com - it's a great resource. Heroquest is a great RPG. Many fond memories there. A nice RPG/Adventure that you can setup and play pretty quick once you know the rules. Lots of expansion material. http://boardgamegeek.com/game/699The DarkWorld games are also fun along the same lines. Some different mechanics and a cooler playfield. Less variety though. http://boardgamegeek.com/game/31://http://boardgamegeek.com/game/699...com/game/31://http://boardgamegeek.com/game/699...com/game/31://http://boardgamegeek.com/game/699...com/game/31://http://boardgamegeek.com/game/699...com/game/31Omega Virus is a fun game too IMO. http://boardgamegeek.com/game/3086I've heard absolutely positive things about Aquire - though I haven't had a chance to play yet so can't comment from experience - though it's something I'm after. You might also consider going with some more generic games like Cranium. The problem with alot of the games that you and I have mentioned is that they have some pretty complex rule sets and can take a while to learn. Depending on if these games are you and some mates you hang out with alot or alot of different random people - you may want to tailor your choices accordingly:Cranium and Apples to Apples are great pure fun and hilarity games that anyone can learn and play very quick - the rest take some time to learn their relative rule sets but can provide a more intelectually stimulating 'fun' than such light fare.

Axis & Allies-ExcellentRisk-A classic. New sets just suuuuckkk! See if you can find a classic, older set. Although Simpson's Risk is an idea that has come due. Risk 2210-Lots of fun...although their rules are a little dumb. We've modified play...the game no longer lasts only five turns...it lasts until one man rules all! There are numerous cards for "Colonial Influence" or something similar...just modify them to be "Place two armies anywhere", like assemble MODsMastermind-Uh, lame. Pictionary-NoMonopoly (of course)-Absolutely. I have a classic 1950s Monopoly with real wooden houses and hotels and the old style of Title deeds and the ultra rare battleship piece. It is one of my most prized possessions. Another suggestion-Killer Bunnies. The creator/author of the game comes by my lounge on occasion. I thought it was going to be a stupid game...but you've never seen so many annoyed, pissed people playing a game in your life. My ex-girlfriend used to say "Don't get upset, its just a game." Once she started playing Killer Bunnies, she stopped saying that. If you can find them, and you're in a Risk mindset, other games in the line of Axis and Allies is "Conquest of the Empire" and "Shogun". Both are quite underrated. Conquest of the Empire is a little more on the diplomatic side, Shogun is like Risk with different types of pieces on a smaller scale. I like Empire Builder, but I LOVE "Lunar Rails" the moon-based version. It seems like it could be lame, but it kicks butt. Being able to go all around a sphere is awesome and complicates things infinitely.
Where the hell are you from, Oddity?  I've never heard of ANY of those games except for Risk... and even then I haven't heard of 2210
I'm from Orlando. My brother got me hooked on Settlers so since then I've been into the less mainstream boardgames. Those games are actually very popular in the boardgame community though. But the games themselves, are mainly from Germany I think.

Boardgames are a bizzare niche at the moment. They're not as prominent in the mass-market commercial domain but they thrive in a very small hardcore niche - which isn't so much about certain types of board games - just board game fanatics. This is also why you're 'not up on' them, because they aren't being fostered commercially - video games are taking their place. As such board games have continued to develop but it seems to be a much more independently run industry than before. Also interesting is that Microsoft is going to start selling digital versions of some classic board games for XBOX360 - not computer games based on board games - but virtual boardgames with pieces and everything. I think that's a trend we'll start to see more of.

D20 can involve alot of planning as you need someone to commit to being a DM - but if you have such a person, awesome. A good DM is worth his weight in plantinum.Catapults and Crossbows - and the newer version Weapons & Warriors are really fantasically great games - but they need a big play area. W&W has more stuff - I personally perfer it. The Castle Seige set is all ya need. Has a cannon as well as the crossbow and catapult. That has all the main bits except the star fort. One can always buy more if they want a bigger game. It's very simple game - but it's actually alot of fun.http://www.boardgamegeek.com/game/861You mean 'Whoonu' - It's another Cranium brand game. Haven't played it personally. They make good stuff as long as you have at least 3 people around. Though their card game Zigity is mad fun. I play it with my girlfriend alot. That Zombies game looks like fun. Never heard of it - but I'll have to check it out now.
