Bawhee
define torch, I find a camping burner works like a charm, stack 3 one on top of another balanced on the burner and let it loose

ChicagoRSX
I'm assuming that is a butane powered mini torch, so short answer is yes, long answer is no. You will have to hold that torch to them for anywhere between 5-10 minutes to get them cherry red and you might go through about a quarter of a can of butane. I strongly advise you to look into an electric single coil burner. That way you set them on it, 6 minutes or so and your coals are ready to go. â€On
Stack them, and if you have a kitchen exhaust fan, put them on or near that. The air flow will help "stoke" the coals while you light them, and with them stacked, they will share their heat with each other, lighting them all up quicker. A coil burner or camping stove is best, but, if that's what you have to work with you can make it work. Blowing on them if you don't have an exhaust fan of some kind will also help. Luka (bawhee) is a very big fan of Hello Kitty fans, such as this: So he will probably recommend you get one of those for maximum success
no one important
realistically lighting natural coals with a torch isnt ideal at all. not only is it going to take a very long time, youre going to run through your torch in a matter of days. the normal and most used way to light natural coals is by a coil burner. this is the one I and many others have, it works perfect: http://www.amazon.com/Proctor-Silex-34101-Proctor-Silex-Burner/dp/B000690WNU/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1347396467&sr=8-2&keywords=coil+burner
Bawhee
right, I have pretty much that exact same torch at home, heres the process: put coals on safe surface (something that you can heat up and not hurt anyone/thing apply ridiculous amounts of torch heat flip around a bit apply more torch heat use your hello kitty fan to spread the heat around and make them slowly ash over apply coals on bowl. PS: light an extra coal or 2 to piggyback others on, to do this put coal on lit coal and apply hello kitty wind to spread the love!... I mean heat. Also, that whole process is gonna take ages, I have started using the stove. works like a fucking charm. (tho I still do the final touchup with kitty )

Martin
Ok , ill try that! And how many coals on a bowl for Shiazo Steam Stones? (AF coals)
Pavo21
use 2-3 depending how big ur bowl is, and it takes a bit of time for the stones to warm up properly and you can always adjust the heat from there, but its really hard to get hard smoke from the stones.
