invadercow
I have a Social Smoke hookah, right here: http://www.socialsmoke.com/Junior-Dragon-Pyramid-Hookah-with-Carrying-Bag-1-Hose-i I smoked Social Smoke tobacco in it, and after 15 or 20 minutes the smoke would get really, really harsh. I read that social smoke is generally horrible shisha, so I got some Fantasia and the same thing happened (at least it tasted good). I set my hookah up by fluffing up the shisha in my hand and just dropping it into the bowl really lightly, I pack it so it doesn't touch the tinfoil, but it's very very light and there isn't much in there. I use two layes of tinfoil and the holes I poke usually look like this: I use quicklight coals, and I place two on the edges of the bowl like they're about to jump off. When my smoke gets harsh, I take off one coal, but the other coal in the middle, open the valve and blow out the harsh smoke and let it sit for a few minutes. This does absolutely nothing other than deplete the smoke I get. When I put the other coal back on, it's just as harsh. I ash the coals as soon as they're covered in light gray ash. I inhale often, and usually a lot. I burned off a lot of my taste buds when I tried to win some big ghost pepper challenge, so I have to inhale a lot at a time to taste much. headhunter
ok well it sounds like it to me that you might be underpacking just a little try packing it in the bowl a little more. At the same level just tamp it down lightly and put a little more on to bring it back to the same level and then do your usual foil technique and such. on another note what bowl are you useing? the one that came with the hookah? When I first started ever smoking a hookah I would just pound the tobacco in there just to the point where if I packed it anymore, I would have trouble inhaling. It never got harsh, but I also went through a tub of shisha after 5 sessions. It matters how tightly its packed, not how much is in the bowl, right? SundayFundaysTV
I would try using some natural coals instead of quicklights, try different coals out, and experiment packing the bowl. For Social Smoke I generally will pack it up right before the foil.
Stuie
Social Smoke Shisha is really good JFTR. http://www.hookahforum.com/topic/36609-social-smoke-tobacco-review/ Sounds like you are under packing and your quicklights are getting too hot. Long run get natural coals, but in the interim break your quicklights in half and use 2 halves on your bowl.

You are over packing you are burning your tobacco not cooking it. Use Quick light halves Mix up your shisha with a fork in the container. Pick it up with 3 finger and drop it into your bowl, keep repeating until it's above the rim by about 1/4" then add your foil Poke holes all around and all the way down into the holes in the bottom of the bowl. And use 2 quicklight halves and you should be golden

king_lunchb0x
there is always a fine line for that good session, underpack over pack to much coal..this list goes on. each tobacco is different as well. just dont give up
mustang67n
I agree with stuie on halving the quick lights. 2 whole QL's is a LOT of heat. split one in half and light each half and place them on the outside like you were doing with the 2 whole coals. they dont have to be hanging off, but keep them separated. this will help with your heat a LOT also underpacking the bowl will give you good air flow, but with less mass in the bowl, it takes less heat to get it going. i generally pack up to the foil if not a little bit over. invadercow
Had a good session for once! Used coconara coals, I broke them into halves and put them on the oven on high for 5 minutes. i put three of the half-sized coals in a triangle pattern on my properly punched, double layered foil. The shisha was packed pretty tightly, any tighter and itd start getting hard to draw. I put a lot in there. It got harsh a few times, but I just took the coals off, blew the smoke out of the valve, waited 5 minutes and put them back on. It was actually really, really good! Now I just have to get better at it.
