wanna add inches to your stem overnite?!?!

Recommended Posts

[EDITTED] I was smoking my hookah over the weekend, it's a little cheapo holding me over until my buddy gets back from UAE. I got to looking at it closely and since I got it I always thought the stem was one solid piece. It did not seem me they would want to make lengthening a stem very easy. To avoid taking down my only hookah I bought a new stem just in case it did not survive the experiment. The thin part of the stem is pressed into the dumpy fat part (where the hose and valve fittings are)and has some sort of nappy adhesive. I will be posting pics tonight but I am adding probably 6 inches to it. I will post the step by step. I used my cutting torch head turned down low, but you could get away with heating it in your oven as well. There are many ways of getting it apart. The main thing is not to break anything. I am making a run by the hardware store after work to get what I need to extend the stem..... Now don't make fun of my MS Paint but this is where the stem comes apart and where I am adding inches to my shaft! Ms. Scalli is so excited..... damn is she about to be disappointed [:0]{Here is where I added, instead of putting pics all over I will cover the entire project on the first post}For the shorterm I was limited to what I could find as far as the decorative part of the stem. So I just got the internal plumbing and decided to dig around the house after I got home. The best I could find there was a piece of 3/4" copper pipe. I cut it long because I can always shorten it. I put it on my metal lathe and gave it a brushed finish with some super fine emory cloth so that went really fast. The materials I picked up at the hardware store was a piece of 1/2 CPVC... note that it is CPVC, not PVC. It's a lot different but in this case it is the diameter that made it work.I got two 1/2" CPVC couplings although for now I only needed one. I spun that on the lathe so make it fit in the bottom piece of the stem. Using needle nose pliers as a spanner wrench I twisted and pulled the nylon piece that the tube that goes into the base screws in (see pic)I had to spin it in the lathe to make it fit into the coupling as well as the outside of the coupling to fit in the base of the stem. I really do not like the look of it right now. It needs some wood disks or balls or something. But it is functional and smoked good. I am not sure if I will stay with the copper at all. It just depends on what else I can find to dress it up with. I would not say this is a cost effective way to get a taller hookah. Unless you have a lathe or find parts off the shelf that fit without machining you could spend a lot of time trying to do things by hand that takes longer and will probably be out of round. Just be sure if you go this route that you take the stem apart and take the pieces with you to the hardware store of wherever you go to search for materials. It's easier than writing down numbers and carrying around a micrometer.
its all in R&D right now.  I need a lathe big enough to do it at this point.  Talking to a mill in So. Missouri about some really nice Black Walnut. Used that stuff before and it is sweet!  Im a bit concerned about PVC core tho.
The PVC is 6" below the bowl at the same place where the original nylon piece was. So it it stays pretty cool.

nice work... heh I won't lie and say it 'looks' great but it's a very cleanly put together job. If you wanna make it look more 'hookah' like and make the added pipe blend in a lil better, maby some metallic silver paint would help... heck, even the silver BBQ paint would work lol
