Breaking Coals.

Recommended Posts

Any ideas on what is the best (easiest) way to break and split a cocobuzz or any other coconut coal.
I tried using a serated knife and make a tiny cut into the coal on all sides and then force it to crack. It works ,but is a b***h to do.

Help??

I never split them anymore, honestly. But some people still insist it must be done!

Here is the Chreees Method. http://www.hookahforum.com/topic/36251-how-to-cut-coconaras-tutorial/

That's the exact same method I use. It's extremely important to hit the knife with the hammer pretty hard. If you do it too lightly, you might not get a clean straight cut and start ending up with badly broken coals.

Not that I'm trying to be stingy, I'm trying to figure out this heat for the new pico bowl that I got. I tried to Stonehenge the 2 cocobuzz coals I have but really didn't work.

I have a box of fumari coals that I need to try to work with. But it's trial and error at this point. I just feel like I'm wasting shisha though.
Any thoughts?

Thanks for the info. Appreciate it 😄

Craftsman Handi-Cuts

Been using that for years. I have picked up several over the years at Garage Sales for like $5.

Sweet, I like this. And I won't be pounding around the apartment.

I do it right in my kitchen over the box of coals, what little shavings fall, fall right into the box. Almost virtually mess free.

I too have the Craftsman Handi-cuts like Stuie linked, actually got them from him a year ago or so. I rarely use them, though, as I don't really cut coals much anymore. That will probably change if/when I get a Pico. I think last time I cut cocos was when I tried Birquq for the first time out of my Tang Mini, since I was forewarned that Birquq needed less heat than Noir/Lucid. But yeah, knife and hammer or the Craftsman Handi-cuts both work great.

So I'm smoking right now. I managed to cut my coals with a knife and cracking them in half with a flathead. Using that pico bowl but I'm using 3 halves at the 12 4 7 positions .... Seems to be a winner for me.

I need to try it with cocoa and welsh cream as those seem to require different heat level unlike cane mint.

Does anyone know why some flavors require different heat level?

All are noir tang.

Fumaris are going to give you the best heat output on the pico.

The downside is that they make a big mess. If you can deal with your place being covered in silver confetti then go for fumari. Also they are generally more expensive and don't last as long as the average coconut coal. However, you don't have to cut them and you can light them by pyramiding them on the bowl.

When I picked up my pico I got the 20pc of fumari ... But I'm having issues with them. I have used two sticks so far and every time i do at least one coal breaks when I go to move from coil to bowl.
I tried turning the heat on the burner to med thinking it was heat that caused them to break and no major change that I've seen.

I would love to use those coals because they seem to be a low maintenance coal for the pico but they seem to die within 15-20min for me.( I know they won't last as long as the cocos but seems off to me.) If I use 2 I don't get much flavor or clouds. If I use 3 I tend to overheat if I don't constantly draw on the shisha.

I think I must be doing something wrong. I just need to figure it out. Any suggestions?

Only turn the coil to medium heat. Flip them half way through lighting. Blow off the silver flakes before putting them on the bowl.

I thought you're supposed to cut the lit coals when it's on the bowl. You just need to be more careful.

Report!!

So I did the fumari coals on medium heat and not a single one cracked or split.

I'm currently about 15 minutes into my session and it's going great. I tried 2 coals on my pico but no luck with massive flavor. I did put a 3rd one on and it is perfect.
I might have to buy that bigger box of coal now. 😁
