Why Do American Hookah Smokers, Not Know What Shisha Means?

Recommended Posts

Shisha is word from my language and it doesn't mean Flavour.

And yet every American that smokes hookah 'Thinks' that they know what Shisha means.

Come on, sort it out. Stop messing with other people's languages.

If we use shisha to refer to the tobacco, aren't you kind of messing with our language?

Like the clay bowl on top, sometimes we call it a head. That doesn't mean we have decapitated someone and are filling their skull up with tobacco.

As Cp44 said; Cp44 : (09 October 2012 - 02:50 PM)shisha is the universal word for "give me a damn smoke"

But the reality is, someone told you it meant Tobacco Flavour. You just accepted it. It ain't in your language. Do you really want to know the truth?
I know the truth. We have discussed it in detail on this forum. The fact of the matter is that it didn't change anything. If you want to start a language revolution, this is not the place. We all already know that the original meanings of the words are not reflected in the way they are used today.

Just because shisha in arabic means the glass jar on the bottom of a nargile, doesn't mean it means the same thing in american slang.

"If I say, I want some tasty shisha tonight" I haven't switched from english to arabic and back to english in the same sentence. I havent expressed my desire to enjoy the nice taste of glass this evening. I have used the accepted american term "shisha" to refer to the ma'assel I want to smoke.

I am an American, why do you expect me to learn to speak arabic just because I smoke hookah?

As a side note, I don't refer to the tobacco as "shisha" I call it tobacco, I call the hookah a pipe and I call the glass a base or vase or jar.

Trust me, you are not bringing up something new here.
Most people here on the and that frequent lounges know that most of the world refer to the pipe a shisha. However, this is primarily an American based forum... for whatever reason, most Americans refer to the pipe as hookah. Wtf don't some people call it a hubbly bubbly? "A rose by any other name is still a rose", sir.

So what are you getting at? I hope that you are not just interjecting in the forum point out that Americans have accepted the word 'shisha' as tobacco because "someone told [us] it meant Tobacco Flavour". Sure ok. Thanks for sharing. Anything else? Would you like to create a video aimed at Americans so that we don't butcher Arabic language? Oh right... Hass has already done this for us last last year! Even is different dialects. He even explains that shisha is traditional called a pipe.

No, that was not my intention. I don't speak Arabic. And I was only sharing.

I didn't even know that Shisha was in the Arabic Language.
This wasn't a political post.
I'll look up the previous posts on the forum, but I'm new to using this forum (newbie).

But the fact still remains, you started to use a word that was introduced to you via Shisha Lounges from people who don't have Shisha in their language. So it was alright for them and now it's alright for you.

Shisha it is then. If I want to interact with this forum, I need to know what words are used for what, if I see something that is worth sharing, I will.
However, as in this example, I've only gone over ground that you have already gone through in this forum. That is my fault, for being lazy, sorry.

You've been a member here since 2009 according to your profile. Why haven't you joined us earlier?! ;)
I tried to get away from this industry, I used to setup Shisha Lounges in the UK.
But, people kept pulling me back.
So finally, I decided to move into the Retail/Wholesale/Manufacturing side of the Shisha industry.

Now I sit in a nice office, puffing on my Hookah. ;) and getting paid for it.

I don't like it, but what can I do. My fav sport is football, but they call it soccer. A slave is a field worker. A muslim is a MOSlim. etc.,,,,,,
I have to learn a new language just to communicate with Americans!?!

And the crazy thing is, they know what is and what isn't, and yet they still choose the wrong way.

As Coyote said,' "A rose by any other name is still a rose", sir. '
LOL ;)

But deep in my heart it is Mu'assal! And that's what really matter anyway.

By the way, nice video on Shisha words! Prob the best video on this subject, I've seen anywhere.

Are we seriously having this discussion again? :P

I call the pipe a hookah, and I call the tobacco hookah tobacco. Deal with it. :)

Perfectly fine, just don't call the tobacco "hookah" by itself - which is undoubtedly how this whole "shisha" nonsense thing happened

So wait, words like "crunk" and "swag" have worked themselves into common usage, and you are upset about the misuse of hookah associated words like shisha? Seriously?

I think we should start banning everyone who doesn't use the terms in the proper way as aladdinshisha as suggested. I have seen him mention the issue not only in this thread, but in his other posts as well, so it must really bother him, therefore it must be a really big issue.

All in favor, say aye!
