Japanese quicklights vs. 3 Kings

Recommended Posts

Japanese "quicklights" are easy tospot as they have a silver coating on them, which makes them light quicker. They have to be lit via a torch or stove however.Don't confuse these with gunpowder disks like 3 Kings or Goldens. These light instantly, and require only a match, lighter, or some other flame.

I am going to order a new ashtray and a tangiers bowl off of hookahkings. Tangiers or anybody else, can you recommend a brand of coal that Hookahkings carries? I have never used anything but 3 Kings.

Of the charcoal on Hookah Kings, three Kings is the best. I recently stumbled across an older name in Japanese coals...I forget the manufacturer...I'll look it up. We used to use a cigarette lighter to light our Japanese coals. Most people, don't realize, when you are looking at the flame from a lighter or burner or whatnot, the center flame, that's a different cooler isn't hot enough to light anything. Its the outer flame thats hot. If you do use a lighter, hold the coal in the very tip of the yellow flame. If you light them on a gas stove and balance them on the jets, turn it on low, so the flame tips are on the coals, not on high where the cool part is on the charcoal, taking forever.P.S. the smell goes away quickly...its from the starch in the coating, I think.

Wouldnt it be best to try to elevate the blue portion then?

I just googled this and apparently the blue part of the flame IS hotter, but for some reason the tip of the orange flame makes things catch on fire quicker. google "hottest part of flame"

Tried the Japanese and got a real good smoke out of them. Two coals at a time worked great, heated the bowl well, and it never got harsh. Heat management was easy. The best part was the fact that they didn't ash all over the place like the 3K. And even though they don't light up instantly, after a bit of time on the BBQ near the flame the corner lit up, and within a couple minutes the whole thing was bright red.

I've had much the same experience with the Golden Japanese Charcoal. Lights fairly easy, 2 coals at a time makes for a perfect smoke, easy heat management, very little ash. Like I said before, I'm very happy with them and have gotten pretty good at managing them (not that you need to do much).
