The saddnes is that stuff exists and is allowed to be posted on reddit. Reddit got all huffy because his name and contact info got released by a journalist and not for the content he was posting and administrating over. That's just messed up.

I post on /r/hookah a lot. I'm not gonna say everyone there is super knowledgable, but that makes it even better to help out.

I've also meant a few who actually know what they're talking about. Edited by mushrat
Please dont mention other forums. Thanks.

Stuie, I like you, but you, nor the author of that article, have any idea of the full story behind this and should not comment on the depravity as such. I moderate a subreddit with over 100 thousand subscribers, and as such, I am given access to the backrooms of reddit, where these things are discussed and solutions to problems on reddit are resolved.

1: violentacrez, aka Michael Brutsch, did, in fact, moderate some truly unsavory subreddits. He submitted quite a bit of unsavory things to those subreddits as well. However, he never submitted anything illegal (CP, for example) and he never once broke any of Reddit's TOS. The reason the "jailbait" subreddit got shut down was because there were other people who WERE submitting CP there, and Reddit decided that was not to be tolerated. It had nothing to do with VA other than the fact that he was a moderator of it. The more recent sub in the spotlight, "Creepshots", was also not illegal in any way. If you are in public, you can have your picture taken. It doesn't matter from what angle and whether or not you know about it, that is the law. Again, a few users were submitting pictures that were NOT taken in public, and thus WERE illegal. Street photography is very popular, and has produced some of the last centuries most important photos. With laws against "creepshots", you kill street photography, and, in a way, you neuter photojournalism. You can't have one without the other. Anyways, that had nothing to do with VA, except he modded it. Do I like VA? No. Do I like what he posts and what he mods? No. But, he has just as much right to what he likes as I do, as it's all legal.

2: Gawker and that "journalist" Adrien Chen did not expose VA, he did it himself. AC just capitalized on it to write an article. It's a shitty article too. VA doesn't care either way, and his only issue is how people are capitalizing on it and bashing Reddit when they have no idea what the site is. Adrien Chen is the reason journalism is dying. He didn't write an article, he started a fucking witch hunt.

3: Reddits moderators and admins did not defend VA. Very few of us ever supported the type of shit he was into. What we did support was the fact that people were getting "doxxed" over it. Doxxing is the exposing of ones personal information without their approval. None of us believe people should have their personal lives invaded over things they say on the internet, whether good or bad. I'm not talking about "this guy likes chicks with dicks" type of stuff. I'm talking about identity theft. Once that door is open, these "do-gooders" who want to show that they don't support something can literally destroy someones life. This is a problem because people are acting without full knowledge of who they are doxxing. What if VA was really just a big troll and wasn't into any of that stuff, but just wanted to create a really weird online persona for himself? What if he was actually an upstanding citizen who volunteered regularly, donated to charities, etc.? That's why Reddit took a stand. We don't believe ANYONE should be getting exposed to threats like that, regardless of who they are.

4: Reddit is not one thing. It's not one subculture. It is like a city. It has good, it has bad, it has cute, it has funny, it has weird, it has beautiful, etc. Saying Reddit is depraved is the equivalent of this: One member of hookahforum gets exposed as a pedophile. Someone with an axe to grind writes an article about it. You have known this person in an online sense for many years, so you say "I don't approve of what they do, but they have always been friendly with me. So shocking". Then someone quotes you as saying "They have always been friendly with me". Suddenly, someone else says "Hookah Forum is harboring pedophiles and protecting them!". Then other people start saying it. Then after a while, people start saying "Hookah smokers are pedophiles!". You think I'm exaggerating? That's exactly what happened with this whole VA thing. Would you walk into a city and say "baltimore is full of criminals!" or "Everyone in San Fran is gay!" or "Texas is full of queers and steers!" or "All girls in Las Vegas are hookers!"? Probably not. So why the hell would you do the same thing to Reddit? That's the problem with this psuedo-journalism bullshit. It is painting a diverse online ecosystem composed of all types of people with one paint color and one size of brush.

TL;DR: The Dude does not abide.

Ty (Aeon) lurks and sometimes posts on there..

He says its a fun read.. lol never mentioned them being well educated or not.. just says its fun lol
[/quote]

That I do. I read it mostly for all the completely idiotic posts people make. There is a handful of educated people on there, as others have mentioned, but for the most part it's "check out my new hookah!" *posts picture of pumpkin* and "what other things should I put in the base?" and "found this completely rusted through pipe in a wet cellar, should I smoke out of it?". Of course, I sometimes feel inclined to drop some mad knowledge on them, but for the most part I just silently judge and laugh.
