Same here. They look nice in those bases, but I wouldn't ever want to smoke out of those bases.

Why all the hate on the brass bases? Is there some huge drawback that I am missing?

Can't speak for the others, but:
-Can't see water level. Minor, but it's still a pet peeve. Not so much for filling reasons in my case, I just like to see the characteristics of the bubbling to help me understand how a specific pipe smokes in a specific vase. For instance, the mix of the water level and stem length of my syrian tower in one of my BJ vases causes it to bubble much higher, meaning I almost always use the diffuser+lower water levels to avoid water splashing up onto the pipe itself.
-Don't know when the vases interior is dry or when it has residual water in it.
-Can't REALLY tell how clean the inside is.
-There is a possibility of a metallic taste being added to the water, which may or may not have a positive or negative effect on the taste of smoke.
-More prone to leaking as these are not shaped from a single piece of metal, they never are. There is a brazed flat piece on the bottom, and probably a braze up the one side.

OK, I figured the visability would be one of the issues. I don't think that would bother me.

The metallic taste would likely ruin it for me if I could detect it. The main reason I am interested in these bases is the huge brass surface area for potentially converting more CO into Co2.

Leaking would also be a deal breaker. That's something I was not aware of and will keep an eye out for when I am in the market for one.

Thank you for your insight.
