I had these before but I lost them. They are pretty much just a set of 2 purpose made diffusers. You get a small and a large diffuser. The large won't fit on most small to medium hookahs. On large hookahs it is possible to put both on together (one inside the other) which is quite cool, I have to admit. The whole nicotine filering thing is pretty much bullplop though. It's worth the $6 if you really care about aesthetics in particular and ease of use. It slips on and off without any problem at what so ever.Be warned though, if you have an egyptian hookah it says in the manual that you have to saw off the hex-nut (not that it actually serves any purpose anywhay).

I can't really remember to tell you the truth. I got them a really long time ago and I wasn't so experienced with all the tricks of the hookah. But i'm pretty sure that they wouldn't alter the flavor enough to notice, if at all.

Just to point out...there is no evidence that these things will do anything, or be beneficial to your health...there might even be a remote possibility it might making smoking MORE dangerous. Some crackpots think that cigarettes don't cause cancer, but cigarette filters do. If they are right, that would be another good example.

I think its purely protective or, alternatively, hookah shanks were made from some recycled/discarded manufactured good that had a nut in the end, so they kept putting it on in tradition. I don't think it has anything to do with the bubbling or diffusion.
