Chreees
I could have sworn there was a somewhat recent topic regarding this, but this is what I found in my search: http://www.hookahforum.com/index.php?app=core&module=search§ion=search&do=search&fromsearch=1 I've been smoking since August 2009 and have noticed no adverse effects. My guess is you are not doing something right, and that is leading you to actually cause more damage than normal (of course all smoke is bad for you, even hookah, so yes, I think it causes damage, especially over the long-term). How are you setting up your hookah, how are you maintaining your heat, and what brands of tobacco and coals are you using?
mattarios2
Mine are great, but like Chris said, if you do something wrong (burn the tobacco, use unlit coals, etc.) it can wreak havoc on the lungs. When properly packed, and everything is done right, I find no lung problems unless I smoke like 10 hours in a day lol and in that case I usually just feel like my lungs are tired, no pain or anything. Granted, I smoke much much less than most people on this forum. I only smoke when friends are over (2-3 nights a week) and we split one small phunnel (2 sometimes 3 rounds of coals) between 3-5 of us.

Hassouni
What's COPD?
Rani
Okay, I'm pretty open about my distrust for doctors. But............ COPD has many causes including smog. Smoking especially cigarettes we know does damage, but my feeling is that smoking has become to easy a fall-guy for COPD. If I were having lung problems, I would go to a doctor but I wouldn't tell them I smoked hookah. If after testing, he or she came back with "You have lung deterioration consistent with a long term smoker," then I'd agree smoking was likely the problem. However, COPD isn't exactly solely a downhill path. We know for instance, that athletes increase and improve lung capacity and efficiency with training. So if someone really does have a firm diagnosis of COPD, stop doing the damaging stuff, start doing the training stuff. Every cell in your body is replaced every seven (?) years I think it is, so in theory at least, doing the right things and not doing the wrong ones, you essentially have a whole new set of lungs in a few years. Age should also be a consideration I think. If you're having lung problems in your 20's, you have every opportunity to make beneficial changes, and equal opportunity to suffer a very long time if you don't. When you're middle aged like some of us, you have more of a reason to make a decision that you might rather give up a few years than give up your vices causing the problem. Life is terminal, nobody gets out alive. So nothing we do or don't do is going to save us from dying. Each person has to make the decisions to make the trade-offs they choose. And honestly I think attitude has more of an effect than anything else. Joyful happy people seem to be almost completely immune to heath problems despite often some serious vices. If you want to improve your health first improve your attitude. Then decide how much else you want to change, and make peace with your choice. Coyote
My lungs feel fine. I haven't noticed any changes in my lung capacity or increased strain during my fitness routine.
â€On
Been smoking hookah for like 7 years now, lungs feel just fine (unless I smoke all day long, then I do notice my lung capacity is reduced). You are either doing something wrong, have a natural sensitivity to smoke, have some condition or allergy which makes it harder on you, or you are overreacting. Go see a doctor and see what they say, but at the end of the day it is your choice whether or not you want to smoke hookah, and if it bothers you that much, you should probably lay off. How much are you smoking?
Stuie
My wife has an allergy to smoke. She can smoke hookah but rarely inhales because it affects her breathing. If we go anywhere with large amounts of smoke she has trouble breathing and sometimes gets an asthema attack. Only exception has been Hookah Lounges. thehelios
I smoke with my brother once or twice a day. We are doing CrossFit every day and not seeing any problems. Also, when I was training, I was able to run a 6 minute mile while smoking hookah on a regular basis. I've never experienced this "shortness of breath" thing cigerette smokers get. jared
I have not seen an adverse effect on my lungs and I would say that I smoke heavily (1-4 bowls daily) and have for about three years now. I still run several times a week without any problems breathing.

Coyote
Last night I was smoking Zaghloul with no foil. I could tell that my lungs were irritated. Zaghloul no foil= combustion. "Standard" hookah tobacco with foil= vaporization [ideally]. There is a significant difference. I might as well have been smoking a pipe or a cig last night but mmmmmm its tastes so good!!! I'll have to reserve it for a special treat I guess
