skiracerj1
i think we've all conceded the supperiority of the canaries, but in my case they cost 4 times more than the knock offs, and college is a black hole of money, and is used propely they arent that bad, the ones you got there benny, and odd though, mine also have 96 tabs not 54 and have 4 per row. but anyways, just because a product is inferior to another doesnt mean its not worth buying, otherwise i'd smoke nothing but tangiers, drive only fancy german automobiles, and get drunk off nothin but 5 grand a bottle champagne. /end rant
Sonthert
Here's some things to look out for in Japanese style coals:1. Good Japanese coals are scored to four coals per stick. Crummy ones are scored three per stick.2. Good Japanese coals are well manufactured and are consistent. Crummy coals look and are shaped irrregularly, the coating might be thin or irregular. They look poorly made.3. Good Japanese coals have no plastic wrapped around the coals. Plastic wrapped around the box, but not the coals. Crummy coals have plastic around the box and around the coals.4. Good Japanese coals ash with a clumpy, black-grey ash. Crummy coals ash with a white-yellow-orange-grey color ash or a fine, dusty ash. This is due to different levels of brimstone (AKA sulfur) in the charcoal. 5. Good Japanese coals are nearly flavorless when fully lit. Crummy coals taste sulfury, barbeque-y, or metallic.Oh, Skirasirj:When you buy Tangiers, you will find that 250g of Tangiers has about 50% more volume. This means on a bowl per bowl basis, Tangiers is down in price with Nahkla and Al Waha (more or less).
skiracerj1
My apologies tangiers, i had not meant to imply that your tobacco was overpriced in any way, my intent was to say the it is of the finest quality available, and the draw analogies to other fine things which are somewhat exclusive and not available. For the record I think your prices are more than fair, and infact that the tangiers insertion in my analogy was a poor and contradictive choice in the end. Erica
The coals in the black box marked with 96 peices are good. I have NO complaints about them, They are broken into Fourths not thirds. I have tried a lot of differnt Jap Coals and I seem to like these ones the best. You just have to get used to the way they work. To start a bowl I use two fourths. If you do not light the coal fully (Red all the way through) before you put them on the bowl you will get a little "taste" that isn't very pleasant, but, I find that these coals when worked right last a long time and cook the tobacco evenly..

zzzzzT
I use the Easy-Lite coals and I think they are fine. I have never had any flavor from these coals and they ash well. I do get them glowing red before I use them. Maybe the off flavors are from them not being fully lit. When I get the chance I will try some others for comparison. They are very well priced. hookah whore
I just picked up a couple boxes of those in Berkeley yesterday. One shop sold a box of 96 for 14.95, and another sold a box for 9.99. I tried to return the more expensive box, but their credit card machine did not allow for refunds back on the card. So now I have 2 boxes of this charcoal that I have never tried. And I just realized after reading these posts that they are imitation japanese charcoal! Great... We're going to smoke tonight, so hopefully we didn't waste our money!
Sonthert
Oh, yeah, their credit card machine doesn't allow returns... and tobacco doesn't cause cancer (That is a joke). First, talk to the manager/owner. If they aren't "there" or too busy to talk to you/if that doesn't work, call the credit card company and tell them about this flim-flammery...do it at the store and have the rep from the credit card company threaten the store for you. Some more analogies...My computer screen only shows what I type, not what other people type. My email only sends email, never recieves it. My car can only drive to the store, not back.
