2 Hour Sessions?

Recommended Posts

Hello fellow Hookah enthusiasts!

This is my first post, and I really appreciate any advice you guys can give. I have been using a Vortex bowl for about a year now. I really like it. However, I noticed that people online say they make their sessions last 2 hours! How is this possible? I typically pack quite a bit of sheesha tightly down under the holes and use two 40mm Three Kings QL coals. I basically just hit those until they are done, lasting about an hour.

Is it possible to light up 2 more coals and put them on top of the bowl? I always thought the sheesha was done after one round of coals but I am getting the feeling I have been wasting a boat load of sheesha now! haha

Also, I get big thick rips, but not the HUGE MONSTROUS rips that I have seen a few times on others. Is this a not enough heat issue or a packing issue?

Thanks guys, and I do apologize if this topic has been covered a bunch of times already.

Yes you can most defiantly put another round of coals on. Are you still getting good flavor after first round?

And what do you mean by "rips"? Airflow maybe? Not sure.

Yes definitely getting good flavor still, it's just the coals die out. Damn, I have wasted a lot of sheesha over the last year!

I mean the puffs of smoke by saying rips. I get thick puffs, but a lot of the times my buddys regular "holes on the bottom" style bowl with small coals one at a time gets thicker/bigger clouds. So I was just wondering if maybe I am not packing enough or not getting enough heat. Or maybe my holes that I poke in the foil are too big? lol So many things to tweak on a hookah!

A good way to do sets of coals is take the two on the first put them across from each other, when you put the second set of coals put them on the two sides that haven't had coals on them, so it first set would be north south, second set east west if that makes sense.

Bingo. This is what I started doing long ago and haven't had trouble since.

Another thing I'd like to point is that smoke appears a LOT thicker on videos for whatever reason then when you see yourself exhale. Just something I've noticed overtime. I always rated my clouds as average, and then when I see it on video its thicker than I thought.

Other things to look into -

Natural coals are a better option, if you have a burner (or can buy one), those will suit you better. To my knowledge, quicklights burn a lot hotter, so it doesn't allow as much time for the ENTIRE bowl to warm up versus just the top layer.

Vortex bowls, while better than a stock bowl, don't heat the shisha completely evenly, leaving you with the top layer cooked, and the underneath not as cooked as it should be. Better bowls for this vary, but the best ones would be Tangiers (Small or Pico) or a Crown Micro Phunnel.
Also remember practice makes perfect, just because it didn't work once doesn't mean it won't work if you try again :Hookah:

Could of not said it better.

Now Also if your useing 40mm break it in half and use each half on the vortex , second round on unsued spots, and then try again on original spot see how long that gets you. With good heat managment you can find a happy medium of longevity and cloud density.

Awesome, thanks for the replies!

I recently did some research into both natural coals and phunnel bowls. I think I will switch to coco coals soon, but are phunnel's really that much better? A lot of people online praise these bowls for big clouds and long sessions, but is it really a lot better than the vortex? Would it be the same coal application for that bowl too?

Thanks

The way hookah clouds works (or atleast form my own understanding) the bulk of the smoke is the glycerine vapor with nicotine and what else tobacco releases when baked (keyword baked your not combusting the tobacco) . SO having a phunnel being desined not as deeps as a vortex ,giveing better spread of heat from coals for more evenly bakeing.the vortex would take more heat to reach the bottom tobacco and heating the upper tobacco pas needed. Thus phunnel gives better bowl live and better clouds.
