Kosch
Hey All, I seem to have seen a couple references to this, and also see folks commenting on how many coals the coal carriers can carry (say that 5 times fast). Do many of you actually light your coals all at once? I typically go through around 6-7 coals a session and light them fresh each time. But if I'm not paying attention, my existing round will get too low before I start the others, then I'm getting minimal and harsh smoke. I figured doing them all at once, they would just burn down and you'd end up using more. If this is a common thing, do the coals waiting in the carrier seem to last a good while? Thanks! Pavo21
so what you are saying is say light all 6 coals and just hope they dont burn as fast as what you have on your bowl?? lololol If you are using silver tabs you cna light them off the lit coals you have on ur bowl if you are using QL you can do that also but will make your bowl taste gross, if you are using coco's you need to light them when you need them. just dont be lazy and you wont run low on coals
Stuie
I smoke and when the get down to viturally no smoke. I light some more. Max the bowl is with out heat for 10 minutes. If I am smoking sensitive tobaccos, I will go light them when the smoke gets weak.
Bawhee
yeah, I start lighting some new coals about 40 minutes into the session so theyre nicely ashed over when the first batch is out...
â€On
Light em as I need em. I mentioned how many coals my coal carrier can carry in the the other thread simply to illustrate how big it is. The most I have ever actually had in it at one time is 9 (3 sets of 3 for 3 pipes being smoked at a bbq concurrently). Also, I can't believe how eloquently I phrased everything I just said. I am a linguists wet dream of a cunning linguist
Chreees
Uhhh, who would ever light a ton of coals and just let them sit there ashing while you only use 2-3 at a time? Seems wasteful to me. I get up and light new coals when the ones on the bowl are getting down to tiny bits. I use windcover to keep the bits going a little bit longer and by the time the new ones are ready, the bits are just the right size to where they aren't really producing enough smoke anyway. It's all about being synced and knowing when to light the new coals. It's kinda like how my wife and I have become so synced during... err... nevermind. Kosch
Well folks I guess that was just my question, was if anyone does this and how it works. It didn't make any sense to me, but I wanted to check. I didn't see the point in a coal carrier that can hold more than a couple coals (as I've seen reviews mention as a positive) for home users unless you were lighting them all at once. Oh and Pavo21, my waiting too long to light them has nothing to do with being "lazy", just forgetting. At least, I didn't think getting into a good conversation with friends and chilling with music to where you don't notice they are down too low is "lazy". I'll just keep doing what I've been doing and try to catch them early enough! Thanks all, Kosch
Chreees
Only type of situation where I can see a coal carrier holding a lot of coals is in a lounge setting, for the person who goes around seeing who needs new coals.
king_lunchb0x
I light just enough to keep the bowl going for 40-50 minutes when the smoke is thinning out i put new coal on my burner. I would imagine a lounge setting is the only place that would be effective.
Pavo21
the coal carrier i use at the house but its because when we use it we have like 3-4 hookahs going, but i use them at the lounge all the time.
DrSmokes
I never have timed when I put new coals on to light them...but if I had to guess, it would be around 40 min or so. I seem to have this spidey sense for coals lol
Coyote
I'd say with coconut coals I light them when I notice the smoke is getting weaker and they are over half-way gone. It only takes about 5-10 minutes to light the coals anyway. When the coals are done I'll knock a little one or two off in the tray and replace it with 1 fresh one. Heat management seems to be a skill that just takes some experience and getting used to.
Kosch
Thanks all. I just sometimes forget and then it's annoying having that gap in the session. I hadn't though of people having multiple hookahs at home, so that would make sense if they are using a carrier there. I may just need to get a little hotplate to keep out by the hookah so it's not as invasive as getting up and running to the stove Cheers, Kosch
