Solution: Forever-Lasting Bowl Screen. (Dyi - 3 Simple Steps Less Than $3)

Recommended Posts

Tired of running out of foil? Hate foiling? THE ANNOYANCE OF MAKING HOLES? Never again! We will be creating a forever-lasting bowl screen.

The benefits include: Never poke holes, doesn't break, doesn't bend, clean in seconds, lasts forever, less than $3!!!

THINGS YOU WILL NEED:
-Pringles can, doesn't matter the size.
-Drill and a small drill bit.

1) Take a Pringles can and take only the bottom part off. (The shiny circle)
2) Add a small drill bit to your drill, the drill bit should be the size of the desired holes.
3) Begin drilling holes in the Pringles bottom.
4) Congrats! You're done! Now reply and tell everyone how awesome this is!

NOTE: The picture I have is of the finished product with easily over 20 uses, it isn't near breaking!

Eh, nothing can replace foil. It might be close but it will never match. Plus the foil and hole poking are part of the art. The Zen of Hookah Making.

It might not break but it doesn't look good. Also I agree with Tyler. It's the art of poking the holes. Also that pattern only works well with an Egyptian bowl. All in all this wouldn't be my cup of tea

cool idea for sure. Always good to see people taking the initiative to make their smoke experience better.

A lot of us may prefer to do the foil and poke the holes everytime, but some might not. I think it's great, and if you like it, do it up!

I'm a traditionalist and prefer the foil, but I commend your ingenuity.

Interesting. Probably not something I would do, but definitely cool. Looks better than those crappy metal screens you can buy.

I don't mind poking holes anyway, because I gotta do something while I wait for the coals to light...

Exactly :)

No offense but I wouldn't do this. Do you know what it is made out of? They could apply stuff to it for packaging purposes that may give off harmful substances when burned. Also, look how nasty the center of it looks ... I wouldn't recommend using that over and over especially once it looks like that.

Pretty unique idea though I must say.

I'm curious about both this idea and a commercial option. Isn't part of the foil's job to seal the bowl, leaving only the holes for air?

I'd do this in a heartbeat if I could easily make it seal. Actually, I'm a little more of an extreme DIY type, so I'd probably buy a sheet of NSF rated stainless steel or something and make it out of that.

I worry about all the coating on the pringles can, but you could probably throw it in an oven on the highest heat and let it bake off for 20 mins.

Cheers!

I'm all about innovation, but what's the point unless it improves something?

If you pack your bowl right, the tobacco will have contact with the foil. Using a metal screen of any type (oh so many cheap hookah manufacturers try to sell this to us) results in too much heat mediation and too much cleaning. (so what? I'm lazy)

Foil lets us tailor our heat exposure depending on brand and medium viscosity. Here's an example. Tangiers Maraschino Cherry is particularly difficult for me to pack/heat/smoke without burning. For my individual case, I resort to using two layers of HD foil to mediate the heat, resulting in no harshness and easier heat management.

Keep in mind, YMMV. Just my experience. :)

I've always wished screens were better because they are very convenient and they're reusable, so better for the environment. But they don't seal around the edges of the bowl, the holes are usually too big, the metal is either flimsy or too thick to properly radiate the heat to the tobacco, and they're a pain in the ass to clean. A semi-disposal version where you set the size of the holes would in theory seem to be a good idea. Yet I wouldn't use your plan/design. Why? You're using metal that was never intended to be heated and you don't know what's in it, what it's coated with, etc. Aluminum foil is designed specifically for cooking and heat application. It's food safe under heat. The end caps from cans like Pringles are food safe under the conditions they were designed for, however, they don't have to be safe when heated because they were not designed to ever be heated. You literally have zero idea what you're inhaling. Just because it looks like a thick piece of aluminum doesn't mean that's all that in it. Look at aluminum cans and water bottles. They sure seem fine, don't they? Yet now we know that they're loaded with BPH and are dangerous to our health. BPH is only now being removed from production of these materials. So I'll stick with foil. It's not really that big of a deal to wrap up a bowl, now is it? And it beats inhaling God knows what.
