mustang67n
I know this has been discussed many times before, but I have to voice my own thoughts right now.. I've been using standard foil since I started smoking. I've used it for every tobacco I've ever smoked. Recently I ran out of foil, and had to borrow some of my moms. Hers happens to be HD.. I have to say.. I don't know how you guys can stand using HD foil! I have to use more coals as my coals just aren't hot enough to last as long with the thicker foil. With regular foil, I'd still have another 20 minutes before I need more coals, but with the HD, I'm losing 20 minutes per round and it's really frustrating! Even with tangiers my rounds are being cut short. The only advantage I'm seeing is there being more "leeway" with heat management. Regular width foil definitely gets my vote on this guys, and I had to tell the world.

Bawhee
Im with nate on this... started off folding foil into more layers, but for a while now ive just been using one layer and good heat management...
Nerdy
When I moved into the new place we only had SD foil, which I doubled up. On some baccys I use a single layer. When I it into this tangiers kick I get a more reliable session with a single layer of HD. I have used many coals, from coconaras to exoticas and have never had an issue. Currently I'm using on my pico and my small one layer of HD and 3-4 easy lite silver tabs respectively. Sessions last on the pico for a good 2-3 rounds of coal, which puts me at roughly 2 hour sessions. Still full of flavor and thick clouds.
mustang67n
thats where the problem lies for me, nerdy. I get the same flavor and the bowl lasts the same amount of time.. but i need new coals sooner with the HD foil. The bowl lasts easily 3-4 hours regardless but with HD foil, that will take me 1/3 more coals to get to as compared to SD foil.
ih303
Regular foil is fine for most tobaccos. Where HD foil really shines is with TG. There are all kinds of tricks when it comes to regulating heat. And with lots of "mainline" tobaccos with high water content, the margin of success is pretty high. But when you cross over to smoking something like Tangiers, it takes a bit more precision. HD foil allows us to maintain that margin of success by slowing down the conduction/convection process (depending on how you pack your bowl) resulting in a less-of-a-hassle form of heat management. In other words, if you apply too much heat, you have time to respond accordingly without scorching your bowl. Keep in mind, the most successful inventions succeed because they allow us to be a little more lazy. Case in point.
mustang67n
well put, I still prefer SD foil for tangiers though.. HD is good for more sensitive flavors that i have trouble heat managing though. maybe i'll start to keep a roll of both
mushrat
Its all physics. Thicker foil means you need more heat to conduct the proper heat levels to the tobacco. Just heat conrol and nothing else really.
Hassouni
Given how bloody easily Tangiers scorches, I wouldn't dare use anything besides HD on it. I've even considered doubling up. Beats blowing lots of money on fancy Japanese coals...

mustang67n
hmm.. maybe razans are lower heat than other coals? I have no problem scorching tang with 2 full razans and a #7.. bowls last full flavor for easily 3-4 hours
Pavo21
With the box of razans i had they seemed lower heat them most coco coals. But foil is foil depending how thin it feels i'll double up or just use it as it, never had issues with my tobacco being to hot or not because of the foil. Atleast that i know of nater mater
king_lunchb0x
i notice some heat differences but one main plus for me for HD is how it wouldn't tear as easily when pulling tight and poking holes. I normally use the HD but my girl bought me the regular so I still have about 150ft before its all used up.
Coyote
If regular foil is working great for you then you don't have to change anything. If all you have is HD foil right now poking lots of big holes (bigger than a toothpick) will help to release more heat. I'm trying our hole method right now to see if there is a difference

ryno
I've always used HD foil. Never liked the thing stuff. i have always gotten a better smoke with HD. And that is also mine hole pattern for Tangiers. Maybe slightly smaller holes.

[/quote] Didn't get around to taking pics, but I really didn't notice a big difference with flavor or smoke. The thing I did notice though was that I did have to add more heat than I usually do earlier in the bowl. I will get photos up once I order more tang (assuming sites have the flavors I want). I'm currently all out
