Absence Of A Purge Valve A Big Deal?

Recommended Posts

Alright, so I have been drooling over the larger Elmas hookahs for a few months now, but uniting recently, I have not had too much extra funds on hand. Now it seems to be a possibility, however, one thing that always turned me off a little on Elmas was the lack of purge valve.

I have been using a large KM trimetal jumbo base for about two years now, so my heat management is fairly good varying on what tobacco I am using. I have been cutting ccn's, stonehenging, and simply using 2-3 full flat coals for a bowl, BUT, every once and a while the smoke will get harsh due to error, at which I would just purge and it would be fine.

What I'm getting at, what do you guys do if smoke gets harsh and there is no valve? That is the main thing holding me back from getting a large Elmas at this point.

Thanks in advance for any input or advice you all have to offer.

Best regards,
Glen

if nothing else its gonna make you master heat management so you wont use the purge valve, basically dont find yourself in a situation where you would need it... otherwise what you could do (had a pipe with a rusted purge when I was still new to hookah) is take off the coals and bowl then force yourself to suck out the gross harsh smoke in the vase... or just reposition the coals as soon as it gets harsh and fix it before it burns to oblivion. Either way a purge isnt really needed for a good smoking experience and elmas pipes are nice.

Not to sound cocky or anything, but my smoke doesn't get harsh. Once you know the amount of tobacco and coals to use it is like clock work. BUT, if I were smoking one of my Elmas pipes and it got harsh I would just re adjust the coals, take one shitty hit, and be done with it lol. Some people say they take the bowl off and blow into the hose as well.

Don't worry about the purge, there is no need it is only one more thing to clean/rust/whatever, as long as you do have your heat management down.

Honestly, buy the Elmas :-) Easily my favorite pipe maker at the moment. I am sure as time goes on more things will surface but after buying one Elmas, I sold most of my pipes and now have 7 of them they hit perfectly, look gorgeous, and way a shit ton.

so even if you aren't a hookah god like some of these folks I think you will be ok. Most old hookahs I've seen don't have valves anyways so...

Worse comes to worse you pull the head, take a lung or two for the team, replace the head and keep on smokin'.

Removing the coals for a few minutes makes a bigger different than taking off the head and blowing through it - everything gets to cool off. And yeah you take the coals off, take a few crappy hits to clear out the residual harsh smoke that the tobacco is going to give, and just let it sit unheated for a few minutes. It works.

All of Turkey runs on no purge valve...

i think if your consistent enough with heat mgt then it should be no problems. Maybe 1 or 2 harsh pulls per session...would be my guess. Great looking pipes and durable. Worst comes to worst you can always sell,I'm sure you would get a great price for slightly used elmas.

I don't need a purge valve, but my Syrians have 'em. I have a Turk on the way (if it ever gets here!) and I'm not worried about it one bit. Once you get your heat management down, you don't need the valve. This is the only reason I do not recommend Turks for beginners to the hobby.

Thanks for all the responses! I appreciate it!

I feel I can get management down pretty well with my current set up, just curious on how you would purge in the chance the smoke were to get stale.

This was all very helpful. Going to attempt to contact NargileStore sometime soon.

Thanks again!

For some reason it wont let me edit my last comment, BUT:

Is NazarHookah still in function? I heard that Mahir was done a couple months ago, but I wasnt sure if that news had changed. The site still looks the same.

My wife tends to take little lady puffs which will burn a bowl pretty good.  Even after I purge, the bowl is producing harsh smoke.

I remove coals and take a quick series of mouth pufft to move some cool air through the bowl.  That works for me and I'm sure you are not burning your bowl that bad.

I won't take a hot bowl off without something to protect me from burning my hand and I'm usually too lazy to get up and get a paper towel in the middle of a bowl.
