Noir Trouble

Recommended Posts

‹‹

having some trouble with noir, right outta the package brambleberry smells really good sweet and fruity, so im assuming its ready to smoke ive let it sit out for maybe 2 hrs stirring every so often smells the same.

been packing it dense but been getting little smoke / decent smoke but basically no flavour
im wondering how many coals you guys recommend on a pico ( left bowl ) 7ico ( middle ) Small ( right , possibly a "smedium looks quite big compared to other small ive seen ? ) i also have a alien.

ive tried smoking out of them all no success yet... how close should it be packed to the rim ? some videos i see its decently below the rim .. either level with spire or even a smidge under... and some other videos the tobacco basically looks packed even with rim/ slightly under.

gunna keep experimenting but it is quite frustrating getting no results

I always get very little flavor from brambleberry as well. with the pico I use 2 coals hanging as far off the bowl as possible. the small I use 2 also, but sometimes 3 works

as far as the pack goes.. the best method i've found for other noir flavors is putting less thought into it. I just grab clumps out and put it in the bowl then push it down so it's barely under the rim and i get excelent results..

I don't pack it SUPER dense, but just enough so there isn't any gaps between it at all. hope this helps! keep at it. like i said though, i still don't get good results with brambleberry, ever. while other flavors work amazing

nate and i pack almost the same, but i pack it as dense as i can, but not so much that it will rise above and make a werid shape on the bowl when it burns, but i've never seen issues with bramble berry. but i recommend trying the squish method before opening next time, for your acclimation. but try and pack it dense as you can just up to the spire and use the small, more tobacco sometimes makes it easier to smoke compared to the #7 and #8 from my experience.

I always thought bramble was pretty strong just dulled over time. maybe little more acclimation time? For me packing a 7ico is about the height of the spire maybe a smidge above, but that doesn't seem to work with my pico. Sadly I never got great a packing a pico..was just not long enough sessions for me. As for coals I use 2 (sometimes 3 taking on and off) halves on pico...3 halves 7ico and 4 halves on a small (sometimes taking on and off 1 half). Any other noir flavors having the same problem?

Feel free to check out my Tangiers guide to success, link in my sig. Maybe it will help.

As for the Pico, I use two coconut coals, stonehenged (standing up on their smallest side), on the edges of the bowl. About halfway through the coals' duration, I lay them flat (basically when it is looking like they're about to no longer be able to stand up anymore). I repeat with the next round of coals.

As for packing, I've always found that very dense (about like it comes in the package before you open it up), up to the inner spire but right below the outer rim, yields the best results.

Without having pictures, I'm going to guess that you probably are not packing enough or not densely enough, or both. Start out easy on the heat and add more as you go. Allow the bowl about 5 minutes to warm up before the first pull. Patience, young grasshoppa.

Hope this helps.

thanks for the replys guys, and im only trying brambleberry before opening my other flavours.. its smells great but ill try 4/20 acclimating today, out of my alien pico and 7ico like  very thin smoke.. with my small decent smoke nothing special but basically no flavour...

on the small i packed it quite dense and quite high thoguht it was perfect 2 coals on bowl for 5-15 mins nothing happening poped on a 3rd coal.. and i started to get flavour so i was hopnig the flavour would build up then it was gone... took foil off and there was a huge burnt dohnut on foil so overpacked i guess‹‹‹

first pico bowl used 2 full nats, smalll ( smedium ) used 2 then 3.. started to get some flavour not much then died.. 7ico used to full coals never got any flavour packed to rim level which was a fair bit under rim, alien i packed super dense like dragonflymikes vid..like super dense ive seen people using 2 full coals i started off with 3 halves and tasted like burning... and every single bowl the top layer was a little charred everything underneath was like perfect............................

I had this exact same problem. I would be smoking and thinking, where's the flavor?

After some testing and tinkering I finally got it. My problem was that I was not packing enough as I was packing waaaayy to tight. I mean I was hulk smashing until the baccy could not move around or fit or cram down anymore. I loosened up on the pressure a bit and added a pinch or two more and I got the pack right. I also added too much heat off of the start. I was too anxious to smoke. The bowl should typically hit full potential 15 minutes in. I would let the coal sit for 5 min and then start hitting. Now I usually let them sit for 8-10 minutes and take a hit and it's just lovely. I can take hits earlier if I want but I feel like the bowl itself tends to take longer to fully open for me. Idk why this is but it's how it usually works.

I say you post some pics of the pack and the holes and the coal and even you smoking. That way we can try to figure this out. Go team HF

To answer your initial questions.... On my pico I use two silver tabs or 2 coco coals stonehenged. On my small I use 3 silver tabs or 2 full cocoa or if I have the energy and time I split and use 3 halves. The 3 halves method is by far easier to manage for me. It's place and smoke no fuss. I find some flavors tend to be a bit more sensitive with 2 full cocos and I have to move or readjust a few times.

Tang is getting easier and easier to pack. It only takes 2-3 times to actually know what a good pack is and then it's like riding a bike.

Try 3 halves on the small

on the edge or right on the bowl ? seems like little heat for such a big bowl

Start them on the edge but work in as you go. Noir likes the heat to be applied slooooooowly. If you get harshness of any kind, back them off to the edge again.
