Sounds like a good time, wvlooney!

I got some camel bone scales thanks to a member on SRP. I put them on today and love the look!

Oh I can believe it. I have a few that need scales I just don't have the stuff to do it with

 

I didn't even want to attempt making some, plus I just don't have the time right now. It would be cool to learn the art eventually. It was just easier to find a pair that would fit. Very lucky, I am. And grateful to the member who helped me out with them.

i have made a few sets in the past out of some exotics and some local wood, if your interested in some black walnut for a set, send me a pm, i might be able to scare up a piece that i can get the darker heartwood out of for you to cut some out of. may take me some time to get it done, but i know where a piece is to do it with

I'm looking into safety razor shaving now, due to cost reasons and my face feeling like crap after my multi-blade shaves.

 

However, there's a lot of stuff to consider.  I'm looking to buy one and only one razor, but I have no idea what makes these razors different from each other aside from some with butterfly openings and some have long or short handles .  Is it all aesthetics?  I'm not looking for the zen experience.  I just want a close shave at a fair price.

Any double edge will work great. I find myself going through phases where I use that more than the cutthroat. All the ones you listed are fine, get some Merkur or even Gilette blades and you'll be in business.

What is meant when a razor is described as aggressive? Does it cut hair deeper?  Worse on your skin? I don't have sensitive skin by any means, but I'd like to avoid a steeper learning curve if possible.

I've used 2 or 3 different double edge razors and any number of different types of blades. None of them are what I'd describe as aggressive, which I'd equate to meaning it cuts harsher on the skin. Counterintuitively, the more dull a blade is, the more harsh it is.

Jay, that set you mentioned is a solid buy. I bought my girlfriend that same 96R and it's a solid unit, and I personally love the butterfly opening. The black finish is better because you don't have to worry nearly as much about tarnish on the razor itself. The brush isn't going to be anything too special, but it will be an improvement over lathering with your hands for sure. The stand is a solid plus. I say go with that set. 

 

To answer your question: long handled razors are easier to "articulate" to the correct angles required for shaving than short handled razors, but they are also a bit more cumbersome for some people. It's personal preference and you won't REALLY know until you try both, but, that being said, if you find you are always holding the razor near the head, a short handled razor will work the same for you. Basically, you can either use both, or just long handled. Honestly, I don't think it matters much. 

 

You're going to need blades if you go with that set. Blades are like cigarettes, you gotta find your brand. I like Feather, Derby and Astra the best from what I've tried, but what works for you is going to be different than others. So, the best bet is to buy a mixed blade sampler pack and see which you like the best. You get about 3-5 shaves out of each DE razor blade (2 per side is a solid estimate), so they are also a great value and will keep you shaving for some time. Next thing you will "need" is cream or soap. I prefer cream because I find it is easier to work up to the type of lather I like (you want the consistency of home-made whipped cream, no little air bubbles in it). You are more than fine to use canned shaving cream, but I assure you, once you try the good stuff it will be tough to go back. You got the brush, might as well learn to use it. The best place to start is Proraso, it's cheap, readily available (you can find it at CVS I believe) and it works great. If you want to try out a soap vs. a cream, I recommend Mitchell's Wool Fat (as long as you are cool with Lanolin) for the same reasons. 

 

EVERYTHING ELSE IS LUXURY. I REPEAT, EVERYTHING ELSE IS LUXURY. Don't get caught up in the buying of endless products. Buy a razor, a blade sampler, brush and soap/cream and you are solid.

I've been using real shaving cream for a few years now, but always stuck with Lab or department store stuff.  I decided to splurge just a little bit and picked up Geo F. Trumper Coconut Oil shave cream.  I'm pretty excited about it.

Nothing wrong with any of that (and I think that brush is actually a nicer quality than the one that was in the set, just looking at the hairs). I have a higher end Edwin Jagger and it's a solid shaver, the only thing I don't like about it is that you have to unscrew the head to put on a new razor. Not a big deal, but that's why I prefer butterfly. Sampler pack is solid as well, and looking at that I just remembered that I didn't mind the Lord blades either.

 

I really like Geo F. Trumper shave creams. They have, in my opinion, some of the best smells. You made a good choice, Coconut Oil is my second favorite. If you like the smell of fresh lime, you HAVE to check out GFT Limes products (they have an entire line of stuff, all of which I have tried and been pleased with). The shave cream and the Skin Food are great, and if you like a heavy sting to your aftershave, the limes aftershave is like limes on fire lol.

Interesting you posted on this thread again, Jay, and about safety razors... I've been considering picking one up myself. Some mornings I'm just so lazy I don't feel like doing the whole process, and would like something a bit quicker.

 

Not right now, though... I'm participating in No Shave November. :D First time I've grown a beard. And apparently I've won already... 3 times since Nov 1st. :P Not bad, considering it's only the 6th...

 

Oh, and I guess I'm participating to show my support for men's health stuff... Yeah. :ph34r:

Unfortunately, I accidentally ordered the wrong one and wanted to return it, but Amazon is unable to offer returns/refunds for razors.  So, they just refunded me the purchase price and said to dispose of the razor at my convenience.  :huh:

 

I really didn't want this particular model, but for Free.99, I guess I'll just keep it. B)

I do like the scent of limes, but not as a fragrance product.  There's just something weird about it to me.  I'm more of a sandalwood, leather, tobacco scented person.

Me too. My favorite scents are sandalwood and bay rum.

Can't complain there! Free is free! I'd learn on it and upgrade later if you decide you like wet shaving.
