Fouda
Which do you call it? I've heard both said and have seen both. I've always called it a base because that's what I heard it called first. So what do you call it and why? And if anyone knows what it's traditionally been called that would be helpful as well :)
mustang67n
I switch on and off and call it both.. Kinda like saying stem, shank, etc. I mean.. it IS the base of the pipe.. but it's also a vase.. so.. idk.. lol
joytron
Don't forget jar!
Tyler
I might be wrong on this but Hass will clear it up if I am, but the term shisha actually refers to the glass base that we are now used to having on our pipe, while the term nargil, means coconut in farsi, which coconuts were used as the first "base" in the first hookahs. Pavo21
i say nargile base and vase, depending on who im talking to or how i word the sentence lol.
Bawhee
shisha is used for the whole pipe, as is nargile, generally :P I say vase or base.

Chreees
Vase, base, glass, jar, AND jug... All of them. There is no right and wrong when it comes to describing this particular part of the hookah, IMO.
Fouda
Not trying to make it seem that way. Just wondering what everyone calls it.
Hellz
I prefer to call it "That thing there, y'know... the thingy that holds water"
Bawhee
I prefer to call it "That thing there, y'know... the thingy that holds water"I will say that I use the term vase/base/thingamajig only on the forums, if Im with friends Ill refer to the pipe as shisha cause thats the term thats staple in slovenia and either use that cause everyone knows what I mean or just say there isnt enough/theres too much water without saying where cause again everyone knows what im talking about.that post reminded me :P
Skoozle
Its a vase until you put a stem in it, then its a base. A rock is just a rock until its a projectile. Depends on how it's being used.

Hassouni
In Arabic it's referred to as a glass (in Lebanese Arabic: izzéze), so that's what I typically call it in English. Otherwise, either base or vase. And yes, şişe in Turkish (aka shisha) comes from shisheh meaning glass in Persian, and just refers to the water receptacle (şişe also generically means "bottle" in Turkish, and of course in Arabic "shisha" IS THE WHOLE PIPE! :dash2: )

mustang67n
I thought shisha meant tabacco ;) It does.. that's what I call it anyways.. and I always tell people to call the tobacco shisha, despite elder chris' hatred towards the improper use.. ALWAYS.. on that note.. i have to pack some shisha into my bowl that will sit atop my hubbly bubbly with its vase....
