ilikemyusername
Ok, I've made my own shisha in the past with relatively decent (smokable) results. Usually it's a flavorless slightly harsh smoke. So what's in a good shisha for me? Oomph! Cloud density Flavor Longevity What do I mean by oomph? I like a smoke that I know is there, something substantial, deep... Hard to describe but I'm sure most of you know what I'm talking about. Cloud density, that should be fairly obvious... Flavor again... You guys got this And longevity. I don't want a 10 minute smoke. For flavor, I found the source for candy flavorings, it's saved on my pc under fav but it's not hooked up right now. I think it's Lorna dune? That should work well. And by the flavorings they carry I'd say some other shisha manufacturers might use them as well... For cloud density here's my issue... Glycerin by itself makes a wonderful , slightly harsh thundercloud that dissipates in the atmosphere pretty quickly. Would a little molasses smoothe it out and let it linger longer? Or should I be using honey, agave, corn syrup? Finally for incorporating the flavor... Do you guys think it would be best to flavor the tobacco directly? Or should I add the flavoring to the smokable glycerine mixture? I could in theory take my tobacco, a half a cup of water with say ... Raspberry flavor in it, let the tobacco soak this all up, let it dry a bit then add the smoke goo on top of it, or just take my dry tobacco and smother it in raspberry glycerine honey molasses corn syrup... Opinions? Experiences? Facts? Oh, and due to the naturally thick qualities of molasses I'm leaning toward that but I fear that my shisha will taste or raisins... Hook it up with some comments! Tyler
You ought to use honey, glycerine AND molasses, each one gives a necessary boost in the process. Also, flavor the tobacco AND the "goup"
ilikemyusername
So where do I purchase a large quantity of tobacco? I have a roll your own cigarette store nearby but would cig tobacco be any good? If I do go with cig cut what if any would be the down side? Obviously taste wouldn't be right but if I got a sweet fermented tobacco that may be nice...
ilikemyusername
Also, I'm sure I'm going to want a nice robust tobacco. Maybe a pack of backwoods?
Grim_Puffer
Also, I'm sure I'm going to want a nice robust tobacco. Maybe a pack of backwoods? I don't know if those are good choices but you can buy tobacco direct from the dealers in bulk. Have a guy I know who does this to make his own snus, it's just plain tobacco of various cuts, depending on level of potential nicotine. Ill try and find out who he goes through and how much you have to buy.

ezxen
Oomph! I understand this its about the volume and density to the smoke you feel in your lungs. Cloud density Glycerine . More glycerine deeper clouds, sacrafice flavor tho as in my expirence glycerine flavor slowly takes over. Flavor I used alcohole exstracts and some scented incence oils . The inscence oils worked better for flavor ,but i dont know health risk with them just what i used one time. Longevity

dizzbizz
Is this really cost effective? I'm just wondering because, why go through the trouble if you can buy shisha that already smokes well?
Bawhee
More of a "Hey, why not?" sorta project imo, we all get bored and wanna try something new right?
ilikemyusername
I could see it being cost effective, as long as I buy everything in bulk. It's not really about the cost though, it's about making awesome shisha. I don't want any dye in it and I want to know what goes into it. I also want to be able to load a large phunnel without worrying about too much of an impact on my stash. If I have 10 or more kilos and I load 50 grams into a bowl, it's not really hurting anything. Also, if I make my own and make the flavors I like and it work out and is great shisha, they should all take the same amount of heat and the same technique. And also, it fits in with the fact that I cook, brew beer, ferment wine, why not make my own shisha. I want a nice soupy thick long lasting bad ass shisha

Rani
Oh, but back to the original posting...... You know this has been brewing in the back of my mind to try myself but why wouldn't you put it all together and allow it to cook down into "goop"? In cooking pretty much anything you do reductions, meaning you have more water at the beginning and allow the simmer to extract the flavors into the soup (or in this case goop), as the water is release into steam and the flavors concentrate. Every sauce ever made is done by reduction method, so I would think you'd do the same thing with tobacco. 'Rani

PJCrusader
http://www.leafonly.com/unprocessed_virginia_flue_cured_tobacco.php is what I used last time I made a batch. https://docs.google.com/document/d/10IHdBWEG_zV6azn1LERHdp10VdJZcd3EAFH518R1iao/edit is the guide I followed. It worked quite well I did not wash mine as much as stated in the guide, and I ended up being the only person to smoke that batch. It ended up coming down to about $8 per 250g in costs to make
