Diy Hose Question!

Recommended Posts

So i am thinking of building my own hose so I came here because I can't find any answers for it.

Anyways here is the question: can you use a plastic electrical tubing for the hose?

I am building the hose as an quick connect system and I am also thinking of adding an handle.

Answer when you can and also give some tips because its my first time making a hose :) Edited by KrestWolf

You need something flexible, but strong enough it won't collapse in on intself when you hit it. I have found this stuff is the absolute best for DIY hoses.

The smaller diameters are VERY flexible. Say the 1/2 inch stuff. It is ribbed to look like a traditional hose but is reinforced with plastic IN the hose itself like a spine. Totally washable.

Finding the 1/2" corrugated is sometimes hard.  And something came up recently about mold spores happening in the folds of things that are exposed to moisture.  Makes me wonder about the "corrugated" little nooks and crannies, you know?  Somebody told me to try 3/16" silicon air tubing which is supposed to be really flexible so I've ordered some.  At 3/16" ID it should stretch almost perfectly over the hose tips, so we'll see.  It was flexible enough to be sold in a 25' length looped around into a 6" x 3" by 1" thick little package, so I'm thinking that's pretty flexible.  It's made for aquariums and supposedly has nothing that can effect the living fish, so should be quite safe to use.  I'll let you know when I get the stuff in a couple days.  After I did my research, I found it on Amazon.com for less than $6.00 for the package.  Oh, and you can get quick connect valves, even one way valves made specifically for the stuff.

3/16" is going to be way to small to get a decent pull from...

LOL, yeah, I meant 7/16" but I don't like what came at all, at least not for hookah hoses.  It's so flexible that it just droops right from the connection so it's sort of kinking almost like a fabric fold.  Oh, well, worth just a few bucks to check out.  Ever onward................

For my DIY hose I use 5/8"ID food grade silicone tubing. Silicone is the absolute best material you can use for hoses, but it's expensive as fuck. It's completely washable, it doesn't stain (visually or flavor wise), it's completely flexible but it doesn't collapse in on itself (even at 5/8"ID, which is ginormous). I like using it with either my Regal or one of my KM's. With the increase in draw, you just need to raise the water level in the base.

If you don't plan on spending an assload on silicone, go with the corrugated plastic sprinkler tubing mush suggested, and you can use sprinkler fittings designed to connect to that for the hose handle and tip. Wrap the whole works tightly in yarn or fabric and you're good to go.
