Coco Nara Issues?

Recommended Posts

Hi all. I'm wondering if I got a bad box of coals... my first box of 45 lit really easily on my portable electric burner. that box ran out so I bought a new box of 108. These take forever to light, if they even light at all! I'm puffing away now after an hour and a half struggle to light these things. I finally had to set a quicklight in my Lotus in top of the three coals to get it going. Any suggestions?

Have you double checked to make sure the portable burner is still putting out 100% power? Sounds like the burner could be conveniently dying when you bought a new box of cocos. I know when the few that have died on me died, they slowly die, they get weaker and weaker until they conk out.

The burner is brand newish (only used it for the first box), but I'll double check. I got both boxes from hookah-shisha.com, who's never sent non-genuine product to me in the past. The boxes appear to have the same packaging. I doubt moisture is a factor, though I don't know what they were subject to in storage or during shipping. Any way to check for and treat moisture? Thanks for the replies, guys!

Turns out, the new coals are the right ones, and the first box of 45 were fakes! Thanks for helping me sleuth this one out.

But that begs the question, what's making these harder to light? I'm leaning towards the burner. It's a generic, flat surface model...perhaps one with an exposed coil like the one H-S sells will work better.

Also, yes, I have heard that baking the coals at a low temp in the oven fix the moisture issue (I doubt that's the case with these on this thread, but it's happened before so it's bound to happen again).

and this is why i stick with japs

Yeah, but you are able to buy japs at wholesale cost. Doesn't work out so well for the rest of us who have to pay retail price on them. For us, it's better to stick with cocos that last longer and are cheaper per coal. :)

Hey Chris yes I do get them at cost but. The coals I use at home I pay retail most the time. Because we run out. But the coals I use a local shop sells them for 5$ a box and lots of places do.

What brand of japs? Maybe you are just lucky you live in Socal... Most of us have to order online and pay higher retail prices. I just made a post about this on Eric's Tangiers forum, which I will copy and paste here since it is relevant to the topic at hand:

Why are you people still using coconut coal?!?
Because coconut coals are cheaper (for most folks, I understand you and others get japs cheaper at wholesale price) and last longer (~1 hour per round using cocos compared to way less than that using japs). I like japs just fine, but personally they're just not worth it to me. Not to mention I find it to be more of a hassle to piggyback japs every 20-30 minutes and deal with the mess than just throw more cocos on my portable coil burner every hour or so.

Yeah, but I was basing my cost analysis with Japanese coals being cheaper on the retail price, not the wholesale price. If I based on the wholesale price, then the coconut coals might be slightly cheaper! :lol3:

Sorry, but I don't follow. Here is how I justify why coconut coals are cheaper:

Let's look at the "standard" for coconut coals, Coconaras, and the "standard" for japs, Golden Canaries, both from the same online vendor-

http://ultimatehookah.com/Golden-Hookah-Charcoal-GC.htm

Both are the same price currently, but you only get 96 GCs compared to 108 CCNs. CCNs last on average an hour, whereas GCs last on average 30 minutes. You burn through the box of GCs much faster obviously. So really in a way you're paying almost twice as much for coals... This is why I no longer buy GCs. My wallet just doesn't let me! :P

Easy light Japanses coals. 5$ a box at most tobacco shops down here. Or the Hypnosis coals by starbuzz.

But i get what ur saying about oh well coals are not cheap, most jap coals are, GC's are just stupid expensive. its not something to compare coco coals and jap coals. Well maybe if people are in such a demand of it, i'll just start selling them. lol.  Also Dejavu coals work really well, they are medium heat and ash like GC's but a bit less messy. And scary and sad enough The Ed Hardy japanese style coals work really well. lol  Idk maybe i'll pull a marittos and start selling something.

Erica and i actullytalk about starting some coal business, because it seems to be easy to get into. Maybe we will.
