Packing the MYA Bowl?

Recommended Posts

Hey,We've had the QT for a week and have smoked everyday but I had a quick question about the MYA bowl. In a recent thread I read about how some guy packs his bowl tight instead of fluffing the tobacco. Do you guys fluff or pack it tight? Is there anything wrong with packing it tight? Also, we ran out of the Golden Coals that were given with the QT so we ran down to the local smoke shop and ended up buying some long log-shaped coals. Recently, the smoke hasn't been as thick and is occasionally harsh. Could it be because of the new coals? In that same thread I read that it could be harsh because we may have burnt the tobacco or the coal wasn't lit all the way when we put it on. If I pack it tighter so it's well below where it could get burned and make sure the coal's lit all the way, should we be okay? Also, can't we get harsh smoke if there's too many coals on the bowl? Thanks guys.

I love the Mya bowls, and I do NOT pack them down. I just sprinkle the tobacco in until it reaches just a hair over the top, and then flatten it out so it is even with the top of the bowl. Don't worry if the tobacco touches the foil. I am really starting to believe that this is "no-no" is totally unfounded. I always pack my bowls like this and have great, consistent smoke sessions.

too many coals is the only real reason harshness ever occurs (assuming the tobacco isnt burned due to too many coals or just being smoked too long) make sure those coals are greyed over(completely lit) before using them. otherwise they wont work right, but they should be as good if not better than the goldens you had. heat management is the key, you will get used to managing it until it becomes almost subconcious

that would be me that packs the tobacco down. I use screens instead of foil, and i find its best to not have the tobacco touch the screen, it burns to fast. So i pack it down nice and tight, then poke through it with the poker on my tongs, or a toothpick, and its got perfect air flow and smokes great.

I guess I'll try packing it down tight next time and making a hole in the middle. I remember reading about doing that. I think they said to stick a stick in the middle and then just pack the tobacoo around it.Anyways, so it doesn't really make a huge difference whether or not the tobacco is touching the foil or not? Thanks.
