Teganv
Hey guys, long time no talk. I'm still completely broke but I've managed to scrounge up a couple bucks to get a small pack of coals. As some of you may or may not recall though the coals I currently have...had? (i think i sent them to someone) made me sick to my stomach. They were nazar coconut coals. The smell of them when lit made me not be able to smoke the hookah afterwards and sometimes made me so sick that I couldn't eat for a day or two afterwards. So, with that being said, I don't know if its the coconut that was the issue, nazar's coals in particular or what, but do you guys have any suggestions for non quick lite coals that I should try out? I wish there was a vendor that sold coal sample packs haha. I was thinking of trying out CocoNaras since from the second I got on this site thats what most of you guys have ranted and raved about :P but they are coconut too so I don't know if thats the best choice. As always, thanks guys. Edited July 25, 2013 by Teganv
Skoozle
Welcome Back! I'm not sure if Coconara Coals will do you much good. I prefer Coconara coals over all other coconut coals I have tried because they are the ones with the cleanest lighting smell; with that being said, Razan (Nazar) coals are not much worse in my opinion. I don't think Coconara's will be enough of an improvement for you. Come to think of it, I may have gotten those Razans from you. I believe Exotica coals are made from Bamboo. You could also try Golden Canary or Fumary Japanese style coals. They do have a bit of a smell when lighting, but it's different from the coconut coal lighting smell. Hassouni
Try the Mya coals. They smell a bit when lighting but are lower heat than most coconut coals, which may be an issue, and they have no taste at all. For what it's worth, I use Razans almost exclusively, and I've started to ONLY light them outside. I have yet to find a coconut coal that doesn't give off bad fumes when lit, so indoors is out of the question.

Yeah those were my Razans. I forgot about the Golden Canary coals i've heard good things about those. Try the Mya coals. Even outside the Razan coals where a bit strong but with my current living situation lighting coals outside isn't an option anymore. Haven't heard much about the Mya coals but I will keep them in mind along with the Golden Canarys
mattarios2
I just light my coals in the garage, I smoke in my basement. As stated all coconut coals have a smell, some worse than others of course.

I know all coconut coals have a smell, thats why I'm asking for suggestions for any coals in general as long as their not quick lites. I don't have a garage or a basement so that's not an option. mattarios2
Outside? On a deck maybe? Or just light them in a room that you won't be smoking in. I find the coco ultimates to not have too much smell. It smells like a campfire but that's all I smell from them.

I find the coco ultimates to not have too much smell. It smells like a campfire but that's all I smell from them. Don't have a deck and no way of lighting them outside unless I ran a long extension cord. Plus if I did manage to light them outside I would have to carry them up a flight of stairs to put them on the hookah. I've lit them in a room I wasn't smoking in before but simple standing near the burner when flipping the coals or checking on them for two seconds makes me nauseous. Haven't heard of coco ultimates, I'll have to see if I can find them from one of the online vendors.
mattarios2
I sell coco ultimates. I do sample boxes as well. I can send 12 coals. I did do samples for $2 but I have to raise it to $2.75 b/c of shipping expenses to send them out. You can pm me for all the details if you'd like. Rani
If you send me a PM, I'd be happy to ship you almost a full box of CH coconut coals. They're not the instant light version, so they won't have a heavy smell, and if you do like me and light your coals in another room for a little bit longer than absolutely necessary, it should get you around any left over smell. I leave the room, and just check every minute or so. I don't stand by them. Honestly, these have been sitting in a closet for a year because I'm hooked on Golden Canaries and Fumari coals. Never use anything else, so I have no problem sending them to someone broke and in need. 'Rani
Teganv
I have used a fan to try and disperse the smell of the coals but that doesn't work either. 'Rani I appreciate the offer Rani but as Skoozle and Mattarios said I don't think that any type of coconut coal is going to much different from the Razans I had in terms of fumes/smell. I mean I will try them if you really don't mind sending them my way but I just don't think there would be much of a difference.
Rani
Use a fan? I actually light my coals in the bathroom for this reason. I have a board I set across the pedestal sink and set the burner on top. Plus being in the bathroom, I have water instantly available should anything go wrong. And I also keep the window open. I blow the silver off into the bathtub, so there's never an issue of sparks going anywhere. I don't even like the smell of my Japanese silver coals, so this works for me. Teganv
Has anyone here tried the lemonwood coals? Might give those a shot.
Nerdy
Has anyone here tried the lemonwood coals? Might give those a shot. Just a heads up, those burn super hot and super quick. Smell like a camp fire.
mustang67n
Teegaaann! Hii!! Sorry to hear you're having coal issues. Like Semir said, lemonwood coals do smell like a campfire, pretty gnarly. Golden canaries smell funky when they light too, but they're not coconut, so they may be a good alternative. Otherwise I'm not too sure of what would help you out here :(
Teganv
Naaaaate! :D Campfires don't make me nauseous so I might be okay with the lemonwood, I just wish they didn't burn quickly. Rani is sending over the coals she was talking about so I'll try those out before I possibly buy some lemonwood ones. Thanks guys.
Hassouni
lemon wood coals have zero smell or taste once lit though, they are the best if you're willing to play coal-boy and change them every 20 minutes
Pavo21
i agree with the Mya Genie coals, possibly have the least smell burning. but if you wanted to try, the japanesse coals, the ed hardy ones and the inhale easy light have very little smell along with the Golden Canaries but gc's are expensive. The Ed Hardy silver tabs seem to be really cheap everywhere I've seen them. Might be worth a shot when I run out of what I've got. Much as we make fun of Ed Hardy, he's like Jesus. What does that mean? He's cool. His fan club are dipshits. 'Rani

Pavo21
HAHA rani yah they are good and yes laugh at them when u see them. Also idk maybe ou should avoid all coco nut coals and just stick with japs.
mattarios2
Don't japs smell too? I remember when I used to use GC and other jap coals I thought they smelt worse than most coconut coals with the exception of CH coals, they really do smell like death, they smell foul to say the least.
