wvloony
Ok this may have been asked before but I am curious, when using a funnel style bowl, should I or shouldnt I punch holes in the area where the opening is
ChicagoRSX
From what I've seen on here, you will find proponents of doing that and of not putting holes there. I personally don't, but I would say try both and see what gives you the best results.
wvloony
Well I will admit that the phunnel bowl I'm using is a cheap Chinese knock off, but I got it with the hookah. I saw on another forum(not rhf) that the poster sanded down the center spyre a little bit and did some other tricks to hers, I may attempt a few of them and maybe a few of my own, will let yall know of my progress
Fatalshizot
I don't but my only reasoning is looking at it from a physics standpoint. With no holes in the middle it forces air to be sucked in only around the edges where the coals are. Plus hole above spire means your just getting more air mixed in with your smoke (in theory). But it's not I'm a scientist or anything, just an over thinker lol
mattarios2
Whether it is tangiers or nakhla or desi murli, I don't poke holes, clouds always seem better and flavor seems better when I don't poke holes.
wvloony
Fatal, that's kinda what my mind was telling me tonight, I may dump what I have in the bowl currently when I get up and try again or just refoil the same stuff, not sure
SultanOfSchwing
I don't for the reasons listed above. Also, it's hard to poke holes in metal... (I <3 you, Lotus)
king_lunchb0x
on my pico/7ico phunnel bowls I will take a mya poker or tac and poke 2-3 holes (they are tiny) over the spire, just because the spire is a lot more narrow than the old smalls. so it helps increase overall airflow. But my small phunnel doesnt seem o need any
cenlakoke
I think It's just a matter of preference. I don't but I have seen people that swear by it. Find what works best for you. I think it would take away from the air That's supposed to move over the tobacco. I tried it a couple time but that was also when I was experimenting with various coal brands to see which ones I liked the best and didn't really notice too much of a difference. But that is me. mustang67n
It depends on the tobacco and which particular bowl i'm using. If the spire is taller, i'll usually do one or two holes over it. If the tobacco usually gives me a heavy buzz (kashmirs, etc) I poke one or two. Also tobacco's that overheat easily (tang cocoa, horchata, welsh cream) I poke holes over the center too.. It really depends.

I just got Tangiers coco! i hope its not that heat sensitive :-( how much coals do i use on it? Also i really wanna get some tang vanilla but can't find any :-( maybe for my coco i should break out the lotus which i almost never use!
Pavo21
I always poke holes over the center, never had a reason not to, people have asked me if i ever had issues doing that and i do not, nor have i EVER. so i poke them over. and some people have told me that they dont poke holes because it feels like they aren't getting enough smoke. but i always get cloud good ones and never have a problem. I believe that it has more to do with how you pack your bowl. Also your coal control. but that is me and my friends so. everyone is different So i say GO HOLES

But it is a bit sensitive from my experience. I use 2 coals on it or 3 halfs. I usually do 1 layer of regular foil but for cocoa I do 2 layers of regular foil. THe lotus would be a great idea! Cocoa is a super full flavor. It's really good
Coyote
Poking holes over the spire does the following: - Creates a more open draw - Decreases chance of foil drag - Aids in regulating coal flares during pulls (keeps temperature more stable) I poke holes over the spire in all my phunnels
Chreees
I never poke holes over my spire. Check out my packing vid on YouTube to see how I do it...
getby25
I think it's about personal preference, btw I don't punch a hole thru the opening, try both method and pick how you like also you can try different hole size and patterns for yourself :)
