I just checked up on the last thread she created. Lets see if she wants to respond this time first, before we start deleting topics.Well Melissa, what was wrong with your last thread?

Thank you for your concern regarding my post.I can assure you that all parties that expressed a legitimate interest in writing (which was what the original post was about) were promptly responded to. Those that were responding to other issues (like Hookah Wiki issues) also were responded to in due time.We felt it wise to repost for the following reasons:1. We now have a registered domain, www.clashofculture.com or theccmag.com.2. We now have a firm publication date of October 1st, 2006.3. We now have free products to give away that need reviewed.4. We still need more interested people.A note to Hookah Wiki,We have no intention of ruining your Hookah Wiki, you can relax a little bit. Censorship is not the answer. I also don't know who the "we" you are talking about is, it seems to be just you.---I don't mean to cause conflict. Please have a little tolerance for other people. To those of you who want free stuff, here is your chance. I hope that the civil among us can enjoy getting free things and having a chance to express our opinions on hookah products in a bit more formal of a setting.

Well Melissa, we all appreciate you responding and laying out exactly what your intentions are. We might seem a bit on edge at times when new people register for the sole purpose of hyping their new business venture, as we have had problems in the past. But as long as you browse over our stickied rules at the top of the main section, you should be perfectly fine. I guess a magazine is quite a bit different from a new business. If and when possible, please let us know a bit more about your magazine so we can get a better idea on what to expect. Thank you for being mature and responding in a well thought out manner.Welcome to the forum :)

It sounds like something I might be interested in. Could you please give a little outline of how this is going to work out before I give away my email address that I have oh-so-painstakingly tried to preserve from e-shit.

Meh, I think I'm gonna pass... Here's the e-mail I got from Melissa:Thanks for the interest in our magazine. In order for me to send you the free stuff to review, I need 2 reviews that you write on your own. This is just to make sure that we get serious writers. You can review tobacco, coals, hookahs, or cafes for these articles. Once you send me two reviews I will start sending you free samples to review. If you are interested in this offer, begin writing. The sooner you get me two articles the sooner I can send you samples. I have attached our writers handbook that tells you everything you need to know about writing for Clash of Culture. If you have questions about anything don't hesitate to contact me.I look forward to hearing from you soon,MelissaThe impression I am getting is that they need some material for their launch, and so they are trying to get a bunch of people to sign on using the "free stuff" angle, only to let them know that they have to crank out a couple of reviews before they even will be CONSIDERED to receive goodies (this is what I got from their "writing guidelines" attachment in their e-mail). Melissa is not being straight with all of us here in her first post. Here is how I replied to her:I'm going to have to pass on this Melissa. Your post on the forums was a bit deceptive as to what you were really out for. It was not mentioned anywhere that there was a prerequisite, etc. The forums are built on trust, and if you don't trust us enough to put all of your cards on the table, well, we can't return the favor. Good luck on your new website.Cheers,JohnYou guys do what you want, but I'm not going to waste valuable time writing two articles/reviews, only to get the CHANCE of being able to review a base protector.

John,Your concern is valid, and thank you for expressing it.I can see how it would sound that way to you. We're asking for you to do something for us with some mythical promise of free stuff. The real reason for this, however, is to ensure that the free stuff that is sent out will actually be reviewed. You can see how many people might be interested in receiving a free sample to "review", but then never actually follow through with anything but using the free stuff that they get.Although we do have free products for those that are truly interested, we don't have enough to just give away to whoever asks.So once again, to those that are interested in making a small commitment this is a great opportunity for you to get a lot of different products. If, however, you are simply looking for free stuff, this is not for you. Those who do write the two reviews will be sent free stuff, not "considered" to be sent free stuff. The information that may seem "deceptive" to you is readily supplied to anyone that sends an e-mail, although as a courtesy to those that might accept the offer we didn't feel the need to make it public. John, sorry for wasting your time.Cheers,Melissa

Many folks, including myself, have sent freebies and other things to fellow forum members, or engage in tobacco trades and the like. Like I said in my e-mail reply, we have a community built on trust here. It's not that you lied to us, it's just that you did not reveal your intentions/desires fully. I think I speak for a lot of us when I say that we frown on this kind of thing. As far as being "considered" to receive free stuff, that is exactly the impression I got from the attached "writing handbook" in your e-mail. All I am saying is that the right way to go about this is to:1)Post with an honest topic title. Instead of the one you used, maybe go with "Writers needed for online hookah magazine". It sounds like you tried this initially, got some interested parties, and left them hanging, thus the need for a new, flashier, more provactive post.2)Lay out ALL of the details in the initial post. Not some, or just the ones that will get some of us here salivating at the thought of some free ma'assell. EVERYTHING that we need to know about your offer. You guys let me know if I am being unreasonable here, or taking this too far. It's just that there has been so much crap flying around the forum lately, I hardly ever feel like posting or participating anymore. I'm just trying to avoid more of said crap.

I wasn't concerned with HookahWiki, I emailed you offering my personal assistance, as well as the assistance of HW.com before, and you took at least a full week to get back to me.

I've been staying out of this recent rash of new people controversies, but this one i must get involved in. I feel were being unfair to hookamag here. True, what she is offering does seem a little odd, but shes not asking for money or such nonsense, just a couple reviews of stuff we have tried to possibly get free stuff. Also in everyone of here posts in this thread she has been nothin but polite and professional, unlike those in the past. We're starting to get a bit apprehensive here I think, and thats a bad thing to fall into, and while agree the past controveries were handled correctly, I think hookamag is being unfairly thrown under the bus with the rest of them. A magazine dedicated to hookah is a good thing, and as hookah enthusiasts we should be willing to help them out, regardless if theres an incentive on the line, because a magazine like this could be helpful in dubunking sterotypes about hookah, and also potentially help expose alot of the shady businesses that occupy the hookah industry. Sorry if I'm missing something here, but I dont see the need for hostility really.

Hookamag,I did respond to your offer earlier by email. I would, however, suggest that you go ahead and search the forums and find members who have made reviews of products in the past and see who might be "worthy" of writing reviews for you. That way you can see who might be worth the "risk" sending product out to.You are offering a possible free product for a gauranteed  two reviews. If a person submitted a review that was printed, yet was not included in your "free" product program, he or she would feel very "ripped off". Something like that, or the idea of being the made the fool, would not be of much credit to you.Just a thought.
