Light your coals until they turn white and ash over once then place them on your bowl. You're getting the taste from the chemicals in the quicklight part of the charcoal. Also use one coal and cut it in half, you're more than likely scorching the tobacco since quicklights are much hotter than normal coals.

Alright and any advice on splitting it or where to place the coal?

If your'e using 3 Kings then it shouldn't take any more than a butter knife to split it. It will most likely break into 3 pieces. I'd start with 2 on either sides of the bowl, then add a 3rd if necessary.

I do suggest breaking the coal before lighting though. If you break it while lit, and pieces happen to go flying, then have fun with that.

yeah, make sure the coal is FULLY lit. EVERYWHERE on the coal. Split it in half, place the halves on the edges.
3 kings are a better quicklight coal, but I can't smoke them at all without getting coal flavor anymore.

If you're still not satisfied, I recomend switching to natural coconut coals, take a bit longer to light, are a bit more expensive, but last a LOT longer and give off MUCH less flavor

The tobacco on top will become charred regardless, it just isn't instant scorching it anymore like it was and is now slow cooking like it's supposed to.

Before I was just using one whole coal and placing it in the middle could that have been part of the problem?

Definitely, the point of the coal is to heat the bowl, in turn that cooks the shisha. You were essentially sticking the coal right on the shisha with a foil barrier. The only tobacco you do that with is tombac.
