defiance211
1st post here, I recently purchased a Hookah in Kuwait. It all looks pretty much hand made. Even the bowls aren't glazed that come with the Hookah. I would like to purchase a few accessories for my hookah, but I am not sure as to if they would actually work with it since its been hand made by the shop it was purchased from. Im looking to get a Vortex bowl, diffuser, and probably a wind cover. I dont want to purchase these accessories online if I have doubts about the fitment. Any good info or tips for a beginner? Also, I am looking for a base grommet, or a grommet to go around the stem to thicken it up and make the fitment more air tight. The kuwaiti guy gave me a cloth roll to wrap around the bottom of the stem to make the fitment tight. Im sure theres a better way. Thanks in advance for the info! mustang67n
the fitment is mostly general. Different gaskets can help make the fitment better. some people like the vortex bowls, but I've never been a fan of them. Phunnels make more sense IMO and even the egyptian bowl you got with it (i'm assuming) is probably better than a vortex tbh. Base gaskets can be had from most online retailers 5-star hookah is the place I usually order from, great service, and if you have any issues they'll usually work with you about issues and products, etc. You can also try going to a local head shop/hookah shop and see if they have extra's then you can try them and see which works best. I think it's better to have a gasket thats too small, then you can add teflon or electrical tape under the gasket to get a perfect fit. I wouldn't recommend using 2 gaskets at the same time, the seal won't be as good as using just one that fits better If you have any pictures of the pipe that would make it easier for us to be certain, but most pipes use generally the same size grommets so you shouldn't have an issue
defiance211
Thanks for the information. I will look into the phunnel bowl instead. Ill post pics up after the weekend. Im currently in a different state for the govt'. I managed to get some awesome smoke from that shop too. Bahraini Apple is phenomenal!!!
mustang67n
bahraini apple is GREAT! I'd suggest a tangiers phunnel, they're a bit pricier but the quality difference between them and most others is insane. The predator is good too. It'd be easier to find them online, but they will fit any male bowl port hookahs (most pipes are male fitment, the bowl goes OVER the top of the pipe like this rather than the bowl being tapered on the bottom and going inside the top of the pipe)

SpiritWolf
I own both a real vortex and a tangiers bowl. If you get a vortex make sure it says vortex at the bottom of the bowl. The tangiers phunnel bowl is better.
defiance211
Any other suggestions for improving the hookah? Let your trial and error be my "get it right the first time" :)
mustang67n
Upgrading the hose is usually a good idea, Don't wash any hoses unless you are certain they are 100% washable. Good washable hoses are nammors. Or get some fancyhose hoses, they're all plastic and kinda dinky looking, but they smoke great and are all washable (plus they're only a few bucks each) most washables will run you 20-$30 same price range as a good phunnel bowl. I'd suggest checking out the review's section and how-to section on here for any info on products you may be interested in and and better ways to pack or heat manage to get your desired results. Oh! Coals.. I'd recommend trying either coconut coals or japanese silver tabs(golden canary brand is highly recommended) they both emit less carbon monoxide than quicklight coals, they do take a few minutes to light (use and electric coil burner, they work the best) they also give off less taste and smell when lighting. The general concencus is they're better for you, last longer(coconuts at least), and give a better tasting hookah session.
joytron
Use electrical tape around the pipe under the grommet.
SpiritWolf
I have a recomendation. Try Exotica coals they are a lump coal you cut and break off to size. I am a nut for these coals. Hoses I recomend any washable hose. The nu/fancy hose is the lowest in price. Now as for your water level the highest you want to fill it is about an inch above the bottom of your down stem. These are my recomendations.
Chreees
Check out these two threads: http://www.hookahforum.com/topic/40373-beginners-guide-to-hookah/ http://www.hookahforum.com/topic/51036-my-take-on-answering-a-lot-of-frequently-asked-questions/ They cover pretty much everything you need to know, at least starting out. Hassouni
Use electrical tape around the pipe under the grommet. This works very well, but if you just have cloth tape instead of a grommet, it won't help much. (Half my pipes are cloth tape only)

Teddy Zou
you can also use post card paper and roll it up as the grommet or foil. I personally prefer clay bowls, they hit pretty well, the shisha juice drips down sometimes but it doesn't get as got as vortex bowls, which makes them easier to clear out. double foil, shiny side in, use a compass needle instead of tooth pick to poke holes. Cocomazaya coals as they ash less than exoticas, don't ash the coals often, leave the coals on the edges of the bowls. That's about it.

defiance211
yeah all around still like to see the pictures of this piece ill have one up by monday. I don't think theres anything strikingly special about it. I do like that its a 3-way!
defiance211
As promised and as said, nothing too special but its mine. What isnt in the pic is the Black Phunnel bowl I purchased on friday night. I am looking to get my uncle to stain glass hooka probably a purple color. I want to be able to see the water level, so stained glass will make that possible while making the piece more unique. In the second picture you can see my 2 kilos of Bahraini Apple that I paid only 12 dollars for in Kuwait. Prices here in the states are terrible! Dont mind the Teddy, its my sons lol

mustang67n
Looks like a solid pipe man! I'd definitely get a phunnel bowl, tangiers is the most popular (for good reason, mind you), otherwise there's not much to be upgraded. do some snooping in the how-to's section and mess around with different packing methods and work on your heat management. That's really all that matters in the end, the pipe looks solid already so you should be good there
mattarios2
Looks nice man. Suggestion - try cracking that single massive coal into halves or quarters then separate the coals to the center/edge of the bowl. You will get more even heat and better flavor. I have been breaking the coals with my hands but they never break into halves. Are there any tips on cracking the coals with something to get close to breaking them evenly?
