fai0607
Hello everyone, this is my first time posting here. I'm originally from New York, born and raised till 18 years old, and back on Long Island I've never heard of hookah and never knew what it was until I moved to Colorado in August for university. During my first week, I made friends who were into hookah and we got smoking right away and I really enjoyed the experience. I bought a small little hookah for $20 off of my friend and I'm assuming it's a Mya petite (he uses a mod and an egyptian grommet if that means anything) and a little conflicted. In the summer, I plan to upgrade to Tonic's Da Vinci hookah. But for this small one, I want to buy a phunnel bowl for Tangiers Lucid and vapor stones (also for when friends come over). However, the fitment and sizing has conflicted me. I plan to purchase a Phunnel Hookah Bowl (I suppose it's basic?) and a Mya Freeze Hose and I want to make sure it'll fit my little hookah as well as the Da Vinci. Any general advice for fitting when it comes to upgrading accessories/hookahs? Also any advice for hookah smokers living in the dorms? This also means a tight budget to manage and starting out with hookah isn't really cheap. I'd also state what vendor I purchased from but after reading the rules I'm not too sure if that's allowed or not (they are not a banned vendor). So I'll just keep it quiet, but they are not local (so, that extra ten bucks of shipping). Thanks in advance!
CO_hookah
Where in Colorado? I went to school in Colorado Springs and could let you know the best place to get what. I'm also from Long Island... haha. Welcome! The freeze hose should fit both. The phunnel might need some fanagaling. Cpuld you post pictures? Cloud-Hookah
You'll probably need to get a different grommet for each pipe for the bowl to fit each pipe, but hoses are all pretty much universal and will work with anything.

I'm on Austin Bluffs (UCCS) and I know Hookah Emporium in Citadel and 40 Thieves up on N. Academy (albeit lounge). I have an entire line of shishas and accessories lined up on the online vendors. Sometimes transportation is an issue (have yet to get my license). Also here are the pictures of it assembled and somewhat assembled, showing the grommets that came with it. (My friend stacked the egyptian and the mod). You'll probably need to get a different grommet for each pipe for the bowl to fit each pipe, but hoses are all pretty much universal and will work with anything. I've heard of grommets for hoses, but I'm glad it's universal. It's just strange going from a small hookah to a 24 inch one someday. http://i.imgur.com/rhAY3aN.jpg http://i.imgur.com/e1fIs8X.jpg (Not attached due to it being stupidly large)
CO_hookah
Yay another UCCS person! What you have is known as pumpkin, made in China, not very good quality. Sounds like you're upgrading to a better one, but I would recommend an Egyptian like Khalil Mamoon or Farida. There's actually another Hookah Emporium down Garden of the Gods literally down the street from UCCS. I'm actually going to be in Colorado Springs this Wednesday to Thursday (I currently live in Brooklyn). Also, there are better lounges in the Springs, PM me if you want :)

I'll probably get the upgrade in January if I budget cleverly. I can't really afford them, 80 dollars is my maximum. Also I'm not sure how large they are but mid-size hookahs are what I'm looking for, and I will admit that I do like the artsy bases.
agunn1231
huh, didnt know about hhokah emporium, is it a store or a lounge? I may have to make a little trip down to the springs soon. Also, OP, there are some shops around denver that I can point you towards, I know transportation is an issue currently, but down the road it is an option. CO_hookah
Hookah Emporium has two shops, one they opened a lounge in. They have a very large selection. Although, they are a tad overpriced. It pretty much makes up for shipping costs, though.

king_lunchb0x
hello and welcome. Be sure to read rules and banned vendor list. As to your hookah I'm pretty sure it is not legit mya. But you should have no problem getting that one to smoke. For hoses Mya hose ports are small and shorter than a washable hose like nammor/narbish/nagoom/razaan. As to grommets as long as you have 1 of each their should be no problem. If its still not snug fit you can take a small piece of damp paper towel and wrap it around the bowl or even the hose grommet. start smoking! Hassouni
Yeah, as much as I detract from Egyptian pretty-much-everything (except Nakhla and Salloum), for <$80, a cheaper KM (or maybe the Nakhla pipes) is the way to go. http://5starhookah.com/Khalil-Mamoon-Cafe-SWDCC.htm http://5starhookah.com/Nakhla-Shamadan-SWDSM.htm If you have any Middle Eastern shops in your area, check those out. They'll usually be MUCH cheaper than an online hookah retailer. Lots of Middle Eastern groceries carry KMs and other decent-quality if not spectacular pipes. As for smoking in dorms.....First question, is smoking allowed? If so, then you SHOULD be OK, though an RA might not like blazing hot live coals. If it's not (as it wasn't in my dorms when I was a student), put a towel under the door, open all the windows, maybe point a fan to blow the smoke out the window. If you can afford it, an air filter might be a good purchase too.
fai0607
Thanks for all of the replies and suggestions! It sucks that they're on sale now. I'm on a tight budget ($100/mo allowance but trust me when I say that goes pretty fast). But I'm budgeting carefully to perhaps buy in mid-January/Feburary instead of summer because I'm impatient. But I do have a question, what's special about KM as opposed to other hookahs? What constitutes as a good hookah generally? To be honest I want the Da Vinci because of the looks and price (any review of that hookah?). Also it's not allowed to be smoked in the dorms haha and we're usually fine with that but only when weather really permits it. But thanks for the advice! Khalil Mamoon has been around for a long time and offer consistant quality. Many brands don't have that same reputation. I've never heard of the "da vinci", tbh, but that doesn't mean it's not solid either. The hookah industry kind of sucks because there are SO many knockoff and cheap brands who advertise as being top quality when they are far from it. Try doing a google search of the hookah you're looking for and add "review" to it, so.. "da vinci hookah review" see if you get anything that way :D
agunn1231
getting an actual Mya pipe may also be a good thing to do. As Nate said, just do a google search or look on here for reviews.
Chreees
I'd just go with a Mya QT or another smaller Mya pipe, since you're in the dorms. Easier to hide from the RAs. :D
fai0607
I'll definitely search for some reviews, especially YouTube ones. It's totally allowed to have in the dorms and my pumpkin is fine for short/single sessions. I'm just not allowed to have it ready to smoke. I mean just tonight I walked past my RA with an assembled hookah while going outside to smoke with my friend and they haven't said anything. I always love brands with reputation. My pumpkin has a bit of a balance issues and there were plenty of times where I had to recover it from falling and it's really inconvenient. That and the tiny ash tray does not make it an ideal inside hookah. I'll open my mind to the KM. I'm one of those people who if they seem something they really like they'll do whatever it takes to get it haha. As far as quality, are we talking how sturdy/reliable the bowl and bases are as well as heat management? I've heard so many issues on certain hookahs that have issues with heat management. The bowls are enterchageable. Any bowl you'll get with a chinese hookah is going to basically be garbage. But what I mean as far as quality is the welds, durability, materials used, etc. Quality pipes will last you a lifetime, others will last a few months or maybe a year or two, but ultimately they won't keep up. Mya makes amazing pipes and the QT's are tiny and very portable, probably perfect for you!
king_lunchb0x
KM were the name of the game few years back. My first hookah buy was a km single pear still use it everyday ( aside from the hose port welds came loose...jb weld fixed that) But from several reviews that are more current, the lower price KM's can be pretty shitty. Hassouni has a good idea about going to a store to check out in person. Brands that have still good rep are magdy zidan(cant remember how to spell it) MYA, Farida, Km is still up there but I think the higher models seem to be better on quality. Syrians are good too but they don't really have brands and keep in mind Chinese make knock-offs of damn near every style of hookah. You have plenty of time to check sizes and styles...who knows, maybe a new maker will come around and another make will fade away by then.
ChicagoRSX
My wife started smoking hookah when she was in college and that is where I was introduced to it. I know in their dorm, they don't even allow smoking. So her and her friends had to smoke outdoors. I would advise you to look into the MYA QT. Small and packs a punch when smoking. It's little case it comes with makes transporting/hiding it away in your room a synch. Also I know with the replacement gaskets work perfect with phunnel bowls and hoses, as I smoked my Tangiers bowl, crown bowls, and my nammor hose with it without any issue. Just my .02. fai0607
Thanks for the input everyone! It's not going to be a for awhile honestly. I want a more stationary hookah where I can bring outside for a big sessions with friends and my pumpkin (I may upgrade my pumpkin to the Mya QT actually, my current pumpkin is the Hypnosis Calabaza and it gives pretty good clouds but the design is just shoddy. It came modded with a mod and egyptian grommet and the base isn't reliable. It's uneven) will be used for shorter sessions and traveling. Considering that I will be traveling from CO to NY during the breaks, I want a small hookah to bring with me. As that is currently fulfilled until an upgrade for that, I'm just looking for a good taller one. EDIT: Do you guys know any good carrying cases for a 14 inch tall hookah and a 24 inch tall hookah? Coleman
Mya makes carrying cases for their hookahs and those myas are small and well built. Qt and petite are the bomb. But for you a bambino and a mikro sound perfect
fai0607
hookah-shisha is my main vendor, and there are mixed reviews about the quality of the bags. I do know that Mya's come with their own carrying case, but how protective is that cage? haha Not too interested in the mikro. But the bambino looks really nice. May end up with the QT though. Another question: If I bought a bag for say, a 24 inch hookah could a 12 inch fit safely if I provided extra padding? (I'll be moving around from dorm to dorm and studying abroad, so it's really annoying)
