frenchyfam
for all you people there who use big arse holes on youre tangiers.,...dont you get this nasty coal taste? i only use alot of small holes and it works well but today i poked some big ones and lets just say it was like a MIXER of coals and tobacco.. is there anything im missing or is it that you fellas love the taste of coal xP JK
A Sharrp SYBIAN
ok here is my best method so far. I make a pattern of small holes excluding 2 sections where the coals go i have holes everywhere but those areas i make tiny toothpick sized hose. Than ONE BIG hole in the center of the spire. Always gave me great clouds great sessions and full flavor. I leave 2 square sized areas which do not have holes and place the holes around those blank squares. then i put the coals specifically on those squares. Good Luck! A Sharrp SYBIAN
I'm to tired to pack a bowl so i put foil over the bowl just to show you my usual method. My other method is much simpler (lotus rip-off) where take a swiss army knife and make slots on the sides and a thick hole in the spire and this way i can move the coals anywhere. check out these pics here :-) Hope this helps! Also i have a whole dedicated thread for this in the How To Section where i mimic the lotus with foil. It's kind of a How To Pack tang thread I call it either "Make-Shift Lotus" or "Lotus for the poor man"

Pavo21
yah...thats really excessive man, like...waste of time lol i grab my toothpick and poke holes around in circles untill i hit the middle and make sure the tooth pick goes all the way down to the bottom that way air goes all the way down the tobacco so you dont just make the top crunchy but get everything down deep in there now ;) lol but yah the big holes thing..stupid using the pokers on the back of tongs is TERRIBLE
mustang67n
^ what Pavo said that's a waste of time, no offense, Jason. Honestly, frenchy, try different sizes of holes, I use a regular toothpick, I NEVER get a coal taste unless the coal is fresh hot off the burner. Try letting the coals sit in the tray for 30 seconds to a minute before putting them on the bowl. Either your coals aren't lit all the way, or they're too hot (from my experience) It's better to let the bowl warm slowly, than to burn it right off the back. And NEVER put coals that aren't fully lit.. (orange ALL over, not just the bottom, not just the top 100% orange)
â€On
I don't want to start this debate again because it's stupid (and pointless, because everyone just needs to do what works for them), but FOR ME the best method is to use a sewing needle that is slightly smaller than a standard round wooden toothpick and punch as many holes as you can possibly fit on the bowl, effectively making a mesh out of the foil. I like to think of the foil as a tightrope for the coals. It's not functioning as a barrier between coals and bowl, but rather a very precarious series of wires holding up the coals. And holy shit I just got a great idea, later. Edit: I burned my house down. Nah I'm just kidding, I got jokes for days y'all.

I <3 you man Haha, fair enough. It just seems that every time I bring up the fact that airflow is what matters, and that you can achieve that through a bunch of a big holes OR a metric-shit-ton of smaller holes, people always get all defensive with a "but but but, Eric said big holes!". More than one way to skin a cat. That's just the method I prefer. Do what works for you, as you said. But that's what it comes down to, isn't it? People ask questions instead of just trying things (as if there is one definitive way to pack a bowl, or poke holes, or light coals, or pour water...lol). Experiment, that's what it's all about. Is my pipe going to smoke any better if I dip my balls into the water first? Probably not, BUT THAT'S NOT GOING TO STOP ME FROM TRYING!

We'll see about your theory... :nyam1: LOL I agree, i've always figured you can either do lots of smalls, or less large holes and get the same airflow. I think the coal flavor would be cut down by using lots of smaller holes by making the foil more of a fine filtration for the finer bits of coal ash. The bigger holes honestly never made sense to me, still doesn't. But again, to each their own, and not an argument. Still fun to point out the logic though. Also jamra's have a terrible flavor to them, so that is most likely adding to it. I'd suggest switching coals, and getting a coal tray. also, pack your tobacco lower than the foil, it shouldn't touch (not with tangiers at least) should be slightly under (a quarters width they say) after poking the holes retighten the foil over the bowl, should be tight like a drum.. Check out some of the how-to's they explain this.
