ChicagoRSX
Are the coals cherry red through out? I know it's a huge pain in the ass to light nat's from a gas burner. You really do need that coil burner. Can't really help with the vortex bowl as that is the only style of bowl that I just can't make work well. mustang67n
^ what he said Unless the coals are red(orange?) all over, they're not lit. I used to use a gas stove and once a propane torch to try to light them, it took 15 to 20 minutes and the half of the coal that was lit first would be partially gone before the rest was lit.. Coil burners just work well for this. Some have tried putting the coals on a gas stove and making an oven for it out of foil to help heat them faster, but still it's not as fast or efficient. kenshinx23
if you have a metal rack or a grill that you can heat with the gas burner, use it to light you coals. Then should be red and in most cases catch on fire.
Chreees
1. Get a coil burner. $10 at Walgreen's. 2. Light the coals on high for 5 minutes. Flip. Continue lighting another 5 minutes. 3. Are the coals red throughout with no black remaining? Good. Take them off and set them in a pan or on the hookah tray for at least 2 minutes. Let them sort of build up a layer of greyish ash. Then place them on the bowl on the edges, opposite each other. Hang them off a bit. Turn them on their smallest side (AKA stonehenging) if you need to. Just play around with your heat and you'll figure it out soon enough what works best for you. :)
Eddie_H
Pretty much what everyone else has said, get a coil burner, usually pretty cheap to get. Coals have to be completely lit. I like naturals but usually end up using quick-lights only because of the convenience.
cassie!
I usually have the coals heating then just get my hookak setup and pack the bowl seems to do the trick. I'd rather smoke naturals now became a bit of a coal snob hah.
Cloud-Hookah
yeah it takes awhile. I usually just stick to quick lights in the winter so I don't have to run to garage for burner. Just set them on a coil burner, then pack the hookah and get setup. By the time its ready to smoke your coals should be lit.
