Would you look at that?

"Bill 33 would ban the use of waterpipes – which can be used to smoke herbal tobacco-free products -- in public areas."

To think it couldn't be strict enough. I wonder if they define public areas as establishments as well (in NY, no one can start a new hookah bar because even though it is a smoking establishment, it is considered public). In that case, hookah bars may either be grandfathered or non-existant depending on their definition on this bill.

Let's just squeeze hookah smokers in with cigarette smokers and have a universal ban "for the children"

Ok well other then in lounges, Do you really carry a hookah with you in the car and pull it out in public? lol

Here in Michigan you might occasionally see one out on the beach but there still only in the lounge settings as far as the public goes

Im no expert on the US but around here we like to meet up in the warmer months in the park and bring our setups and smoke outdoors and just hang out :P

I've smoked outside at a park in Texas a few times. Had a park ranger and a police officer drive right past us and they didn't even bat an eye! The park is heavily known for crime (rape, murder, illegal substance distribution) so I was really surprised.

Sounds like Central Park in NYC...

Even if people smoked publicly, let's say. It is NOT smoke, but rather vapor since one is baking the shisha and not combusting it. The population is so largely uneducated and believe in government propaganda without educating themselves it's seriously disappointing.

I actually had to explain to my father, who was once a cig smoker (but quit when I was concieved, love him.) the difference of hookah tobacco and cigarette tobacco. The thought of "baking" the tobacco is very foreign, but because people won't take the time of day to see how different and mostly harmless it is, we're all grouped in their eyes as "cigarette" smokers simply because hookah tobacco is tobacco. Honestly, the difference couldn't be more night and day. I don't know anyone who has been addicted to nicotine through hookah and compared to other nicotine delivery systems I think it is largely moot than to say, pack a bowl in a pipe or a cigar.

http://calgary.ctvnews.ca/shisha-bars-may-be-forced-to-close-1.1534730 I love how they demonize hookah to "protect the children." Um, I couldn't buy anything tobacco related (pipes and whatnot) when I was 17. I couldn't even go INTO some smokeshops (I never smoked, just wanted to test it when I was younger because I heard this argument over and over again). Lastly, I'm 18. If I was to try to get alcohol, I'd be hell bent. So what does NYC decide to do? Bump the age to 19-21.

Regulation is there. But teens are ALWAYS going to find a way to smoke anything/drink whatever. Sorry I got off on a tangent, it's just so mindblowing how people fall for this BS

Things will be coming to a change in the US shortly I'm thinking. The older farts are dying off in office which is great, because their stubborn personalities and crooked ideals are not needed on this planet, none the less in an office of power. The downfall of one prohibition (marijuana) is already on track and set for success, a large chunk of the country has it decriminalized, now the spread of legalization begins. Once this happens I can see less restrictive tobacco laws also coming into effect from state and small government. Who knows, maybe even the drinking age will lower, I could never stand the fact that you can die for your country when you are 18, but can't have an alcoholic drink. Stupid as shit if you ask me.

But seeing as this is about Canadians... uh... good luck? I'm not sure the impact could be any worse than your terrible tobacco regulations and taxation.

I honestly think that's wishful thinking, Knight.

More and more countries are regulating shisha pretty harshly, and it's only getting worse here in the States. With the anti-smoking coalitions and laws concerning public health and healthcare cost rises, I can't see it becoming any better. Speculation is going around that if you are a tobacco product user, you might be charged a 50% surcharge. So far, I don't think they consider shisha on there but it wouldn't be long till shisha hits the spotlights. Right now everyone is worrying about cigarettes, and laws regarding cigarettes are tobacco which hurts shisha on the side even if it is not direct. I'm glad the marijuana prohibition is on its way to the deathbed, and I do believe the drinking age will change to 18. However, alcohol is so ingrained to our culture (as well as tobacco, I'd say) but surely tobacco is getting the hammer a lot harder than alcohol probably would ever take.

I actually talked to my father about this and he reckons that soon the government may want to try banning tobacco altogether if not making the laws and regulations so stringent that financially it is not worth the headache.

"Health insurance costs rising, life insurance costs rising, soon I wouldn't be surprised if homeowner insurance would rise."

There are more parts to this bill than just hookah lounge smoking. They're also planning to ban flavored tobacco and I believe the hookah itself.

I doubt hookahs/ hookah tobacco will permanently get banned here in the US anytime soon. and when they do ban them all of us should be stocked up on Romman, nahkla, tangiers, AF, and fumari for years to come and smoke in moderation so the shisha lasts! lol

Gotta love nanny states who think they know what is best for everyone.

I'm just incredibly peeved. At least the marijuana prohibition is finally dying out. But something tells me in the next 50 years or so, it'll meet the same fate as tobacco and alcohol by then: completely banned.

...or just completely not worth the headache :P I actually just made a topic on tobacco laws about this, but back to the main point:

As much as I love Canada, they gotta let loose a little bit.
