Has Mizo Gum Changed? Anyone Notice A Difference?

Recommended Posts

Mizo gum was one of my favorite flavors. I recently picked up a bunch and tore open a box, had an intense alcohol smell I never recalled previously. Taste isn't as sweet and gum like as it used to be. It just seems to be missing that factor that brings it all together. I am on my 2nd 250 now and same thing.

If I acclimate it, it seems a bit flat, mainly a strong cooling hit with some spearmint flavor but it doesn't seem to have that gum spearmint flavor, more just a flat spearmint now. Previously when I had it it truly tasted like spearmint gum, it was perfect, now it just seems to be like a flat spearmint with some cooling that most mints share. If I don't acclimate it, I get this really odd taste, almost like olives believe it or not.

When it airs out for a bit It isn't bad, still good, just remember it being WAAAAY better.

In all the years I have smoked Nakhla I have never witnessed or experienced them changing any flavor after it's debut. So I find it hard to believe they changed mizo gum, but I remember it being different.

Has anyone noticed a difference in it?

Sounds like someone at the factory goofed up on that batch.

Somewhat related: Are any of the Nak Mints peppermint?  I know Classic mint is just mint but I keep hearing Mizo mint and Mizo gum are both spearmint.

They both are spearmint.

They don't have a peppermint flavor that I am aware of.

Mizo gum is a slightly sweeter and gum flavor (obviously) then mizo mint is just in yo face. It gives cane mint a run for its money especially considering nakhla can really handle the heat so if you really heat it, it is extremely minty.

Yeah, I just don't like spearmint that much.

Seems silly to have 2 spearmint flavors in the same line but no peppermint in the whole brand.

Oh well, Their classic mint is great so at least I've got that.

  • 4 months later...

Has anyone had gum recently?

Same as it used to be?

I just opened another 250g and same thing, still good but not that sweet sweet gum flavor it used to be. I am really starting to think either they changed the recipe or I did indeed get an ehh batch. The latter seems less likely as Nak is always spot on.

Hmmm ... starting to think for whatever reason it is in need of acclimation. Just left the tub cracked open for an hour and it smells MUCH better tried this previously as stated above and helped but not back to the way it was ... we will see in the coming days I suppose even though no one cares or knows lol.

Nakhla is just jealous of Tangiers so they figured they'd make it where they now require some acclimation too. :P

(Disclaimer: Please understand I am joking lol)

Well here is my thought. I THINK it has to do with weather. I do think a handful of their flavors need to air out depending on what season. Seems i have some issues with a couple flavors in the winter but never in the spring summer or fall.

Gum seems to be one of them, same goes for blueberry.

I DOUBT nakhla changed anything especially with blueberry, since its release that shit has been selling like MAAAAD. My distributor said he can't buy enough of it, he buys cases upon cases and he sells out in a week. He said Nakhla said they can't keep up with making it, and they are a BIG company. So for a flavor to sell that well I doubt they'd butcher it.

Plus everyone that buys gum and blueberry from me always says it was perfect, like it always has been ... so that tells me Justin, that it is something to do with us ... :-/

Could be your pallate just changing subtly? Like I know some flavors that I love will with my mood and time of year and shit just not taste the same too me, other folks say its fine though... or maybe its cause most of my friends only smoke QLs when they dont smoke with me :D

lol, that is a good point but all of my friends I smoke with agree that gum is very different than it used to be. It doesn't have that real sweet gum taste, it's just like a muted mint flavor with a tiny bit of gum resemblance. Before it was on the AMAZING status, now it is no where close still good but not amazing.

I am leaving the lid cracked on the tupperware for a while see how it smells then.

It is more of the smell of it that is different (blueberry). Like, it smells great when I smell the container (with it closed) and even great when I just open it but when I stir it, then it starts to smell like crap. That's when it smokes like crap. I've had good and bad boxes of blueberry for a year now, my palate isn't changing.

If it smells good then you stir and it smells bad that means it needs to acclimate. The tobacco on the outskirts is aired out and what is beneath is not. Just crack the lid so there is a little gap, leave it a couple hours, stir, leave a couple hours. I'm doing that with gum and it is starting to get really close to what it used to smell like.

In the past (top of this thread) I said I acclimated it and it didn't help but I think I was leaving it open too long. Just cracked seems to work very well with Nakhla ... so far at least.

I finally got it fixed!

So here is what I found, with most nakhla flavors you can just leave the entire tub open for however long, I have never experienced it to cause flavor loss but with Gum, it does. So in the past when it wasn't tasting right I left the cover open for just a couple hours a day. But after doing it the flavor decreased big time.

So this time I tried just cracking the lid so it had a little gap. I did that for an hour or two for a couple days and now it smells awesome. I smoked it last night and it was excellent just as I remember.

Fully open tupperware = fail

Cracked the lid open slightly on my lock and lock = win

I wonder if this would work for me with blueberry/raspberry ... those two have been troublesome for me as well.

Justin ... definitely try this with your blueberry issues.

I had gum again tonight and damn ... soo good just like it used to be. Thank goodness there was no change by Nakhla ... I had faith that they wouldn't change the recipe ... they never do ... they are the king ... they are ... NAKHLA!

I did try it yesterday on blueberry but it kept smelling like crap. So I'll try it again today. When you first posted about cracking the lid, I decided to do it. I think yesterday was the 2nd day I tried it.

Raspberry has been good for me...in fact, it's been the best for me. It almost seems like they've added more juice to it. The clouds and flavors have been HUGE. The flavor has been almost over powering! And I've not had bigger clouds with any other brand, including Tang.

Mizo Raspberry is pretty incredible stuff. I need to get more soon!

I haven't tried it with blueberry or raspberry which are the other 2 that give me issues.

It worked wonderfully with gum and lemon which have given me a bit of issues in the past.

It took probably 3-4 days of cracking the lid for an hour or so for gum and lemon to take off!
