I live in Iraq and have my favorite hookah pipe ever.  As I contemplate my next return to the states, I am wondering if it is worth transporting or if I might be able to find the same kind of pipe.  I just don't know how to look for it or what to call it when I research, and generic searches haven't turned up anything.  The stem has an extra water compartment around the smoke pipe inside.  You fill it up with cold water and add ice to the top, under the tray, and it keeps the pipe very cool.  This is not the traditional Baghdadi hookah, so I am not sure what to call it.

I've attached a photo of just the stem.

Thanks,

Jeff

I've never seen that specific hookah and couldn't tell you a brand. But there are hookahs here that have the same idea with ice buckets under the tray. KM's for example, have many models with that feature. I don't remember seeing any with a compartment for water around the stem though. That hookah looks almost homemade or something. Very unique.

This would be the closest I know of but I'm not sure if there is a way to get water into the stem.

It shouldn't be a big deal to bring it back though.  I would take the stem as a carry on to avoid bending the chiller part.  I brought an entire set up back from over seas as a carry on.  If it were a solid brass pipe I would put it in a checked bag. This is what I do when I travel in the states.

Good luck.

Hi Jeff,

I've seen those sort of stems for sale around the Middle East - not common but not unheard of either. Yours is Egyptian of some sort. Do you read Arabic? Check for a name on the tray or on the stem somewhere. Some of the big brands are Khalil Maamoon (خليل مأمون), Yehya El Khawanky (يحيى الخوانكي), Megahed (مجاهد), Awlad Sarhan (اولاد سرحان), to name a few.

On a side note, I'm an Iraqi-American who's never been back to the motherland.  What is the typical Baghdadi pipe like? My understanding from cousins, etc is that they just use Egyptian stuff now?

Boom, that's exactly the KM I've seen before, Ashley.

Hassouni,

I can read Arabic, but there's nothing written anywhere on it.  I know there is something written on the other types of shisha pipes around, though.  I should see if I recognize any of these names.

I don't think the "Baghdadi" style is actually made in Baghdad (but many claim their shishas were).  They do look similar to many Egyptian ones with the curved silver linings around the stems.  But when they refer locally to a Baghdadi pipe, they always have a distinct kind of hose that screws into a brass hole near the bottom of the shisha.  Mine has the open piece jutting out to put a hose into, like I see on most others.  Also the tray is fixed with screws to the stem as opposed to removable like mine (I pour in the water under the tray), and the stem usually juts out quite a bit from the tray too, leaving a lot of room between the head and the tray.

Almost all of the bases here come from Iran, though, apparently.  They also almost all have a little moustached man on them.  Dunno who he is.

Mind taking some pics of the Baghdadi pipes next time you see some?

PS: In Turkey a lot of the bases are made in Iran too, and that mustachioed man is Nassereddin Shah Qajar, who is popular throughout the Middle East, at least decoratively speaking: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naser_al-Din_Shah_Qajar

You're right; those are pretty close to what I have.  My usual supply shop has my shisha style in gold, and it looks pretty close to the one on the right.  Thanks for posting.

Pasha, it's the same diameter because that is where it holds the cold water around the pipe.  It makes quite a difference on hot summer evenings!
