So I Bought A Smokerlyzer

Recommended Posts

For those who don't know it is basically a tester you can breath into with or without smoke to see what your PPM's of CO are.

I am going to do a bunch of tests with various coals/tobacco/hookah setups w and without copper downstem/different size pipes/hoses/ EVERYTHINGGGG BOI!

I have always wanted one but they are $600-1000 I found one on eBay used for $30, I spoke to the seller they said it works perfectly and they barely used it and bought it years ago, it is one of the high quality Bedfont Micro III testers.

I will also do tests of my PPM before smoking, after 10 min, 30 min, 1 hour. Then the next morning, 6 hours later, etc you get the point and see how long it takes for us hookah smokers to have back to normal CO in our blood. Normal levels are 1-2PPM with 3-4 also being acceptable but on the high end.

Really curious to see what coals are the lowest, I assume it would be Golden Canarys or anyother high quality Japanese coal based off of what Eric has said.

Anyone want to send me some samples of various coals and or tobacco? I don't want to have to buy a box of all the different brand of coals and tobacco, if not no worries, I will be testing DM/AF/Nakhla OG/Nakhla Mizo/Tangiers and for coals all I have is elmas coals and coco ultimates.

3. Will you be testing Zaghloul/Khan al Khalili, and if so, with or without foil?

I sure will, I will use one size bowl and keep everything constant for the comparisons of what setups work better etc ... probably a mini. And then later on I will do other bowls to compare to the mini.

1. Elmas coals?

2. I'll send you some Razan coals

3. Will you be testing Zaghloul/Khan al Khalili, and if so, with or without foil?

1.) The coals they send you when you buy a complete Elmas setup from NS. (pinkish bag)

2.) Sounds good

3.) Sure, I always have a tub of khan open. I can do both but I will tell you right now, with or without foil doesn't matter, the CO levels are going to be much higher with any black dry tobacco like khan/zag/etc. when compared to the moist stuff. Studies show it, and the dry stuff takes so much heat so the extra coal on the bowl is going to yield higher CO levels.

I've bought two full nargile sets (takım) (actually 3, technically) from NS and I didn't get coals...I presume they're natural wood branch types?

As for the black stuff, I know it will be more, but I'm curious how much more.

Awesome, you guys are the shit!

I will be sure to measure out each bowl so they contain the same amount of tobacco, and measure everything out.

No matter what coal I test I will make it so each bowl smokes the same. Because obviously I will need more GC's to achieve the same smoke as I would coco ultimate etc.

I also will be testing half coals bc that is what I do, then I can test whole coals seeing as most coconut users use whole coals (No frickin idea why but anywhoo :-) )

I'd be interested to see what an AF or Nak + CCN combo does since that's what I am smoking 95% of the time lol

Will be doing test #1 tonight. Cocoultimates ... mizo guava ... 5 half coco ultimates then 3 more halves ... in a smedium phunnel, will prob be smoking w like 5 other people so I will keep track of how long in between I wait to take more hits. I will also take 3 hits for each one of my turns. Normally there is less people but this way we can compare if CO levels are lower if you wait longer in between hits.

In the future I will be testing different setups, diff hoses, diff size hookahs, diff coals including whole vs halves and japanese vs coconut coals, cold vs warm water, washable vs unwashable hoses, copper vs steel down stems, big bowls vs small bowls, different tobaccos, etc etc.

The only thing is it appears the CO stays in your system for roughly 24-48 hours depending on how long you smoke so I need to wait in between smoke days to get my CO back down to normal levels before testing again.

Anyone have any suggestions before I begin?

Wow, I'm just now seeing this. Can't wait to see the results. I don't have much to offer...I mostly smoke what you have and then a lil tang....I do have small amounts of af but almost out.

Haven't done a test again yet but after only 27 hits in over an hour I am at 23ppm which is the levels you see in heavy cigarette smokers. The one good thing though is that if you are like me and only smoke a couple days a week, you will have at least a few days of no elevation in CO out of the week.

I DEFINITELY need to test out some Japanese coals, if they are 12x lower like Eric has mentioned the levels would be so low that you would still be within normal range that non smokers are in. I will post results when we are done smoking this second bowl.

Ok so here is run down #1

Bowl 1 was a smedium phunnel with 32g of tobacco and 5 half coals coco ultimate, had one window open, in my basement, about 800sq ft basement.

Bowl 2 was a slightly larger bowl than a mini and we only did one round because I was like fuck these numbers man ... I was pissed.

Smoked with 5 other people.

My starting CO was 2ppm before we smoked

After 3 hits = 7ppm

After 15 hits = 17ppm

After 27 hits = 23ppm

After 40 hits =31ppm

We used a km halzone with copper downstem and 12 inch bohemian vase with an elmas unwashable hose.

SHIT!

Check this site out for reference of different levels:

http://www.coheadquarters.com/ZerotoMillion1.htm

One plus we can take though is the following from the above link:

"25 ppm - 150 ppm - ETCOb of smokers immediately after smoking."

So cigarette smokers ppm is anywhere from 25-150 immediately after smoking.

Mine reached 31 after 40 hits over a 2 hour period.

So for those that smoke alone and smoke for 3-4 hours at a time, if you care about your health, be careful because after only 40 hits in a little over 2 hours I was already at 31ppm.

My brothers girlfriend smoked a cigarette when she was out the other night and when she got back (had been 1 hour since she smoked the cig) her levels were 11ppm. So in terms of CO if you divide 40 hits by 31ppm that is roughly an increase of 1.3ppm per hit ... obviously it would go down the more you smoke or at least not rise as quickly as in the beginning.

I am not cool with these numbers ... when you are using a smoking tester device and the red light starts blinking at you ... ya know that's not a good thing ... :-/

JAPANESE COALS HERE I COME.

after 30 min it has dropped to 28ppm

another thing to consider is even in this large basement the entire basement is a cloud of smoke.

I think if we had good airflow or smoked outside, your levels would be quite a bit lower ...

I CANNOT wait to test Japanese coals.

Last thing I want to note for tonights test was, you can also do real time testing by just turning the device on and letting it sit in the room. After smoking the basement was reading 10ppm. So to confirm what I said above smoking outside or somewhere with really good airflow your numbers would be much better obviously.

Because after you take your hits and pass the hose, you are still sitting there breathing air that is 10ppm. If you could take your hits then pass it and breath normal co levels of 1-2 like outside, I would think at minimum it would at least take a lot longer to reach a high #.
