pauldavis
I smoked my phunnel bowl the other night with a mix of al waha cappucino and after nine and after the first hour and second (or third...can't remember) set of coals (nour finger coals, about a total of 1.5 to 2 inches) and it got harsh...well not really harsh but just not tasty...any advice? SanguineSolitude
pack a new bowl? if it gets harsh after an hour chances are youre beginning to burn the shisha. either manage heat better or pack a new bowl.

EvansLight
how are you working the heat on the bowl. For me i do a hole pattern that is just big enough for a quick light to cover, then just rotate the foil every good 30 minutes or so.

pauldavis
i usually have 2 or 3 pieces of nour coals...but always about the same total size. if there are two i put them on opposite sides of the bowl along the edged (i use a ring of holes, usually 2 rings around) and if there are 3 coals i put the at 12, 4 and 8 o' clock. when i pulled off the foil of this harsh bowl, the shisha on top was pretty cooked and there was a layer of untouched stuff at the bottom
EvansLight
yea thats a usuall problem most people have. With a normal bowl i usually take off my screen half way through and remove the top burnt and leave the unused, pop the screen back on, and go some more. Not as easy with the funnel bowl since i have to use foil, but for the most part ive smoked all through the tobacco on the funnel bowl, so maybe try my method for regular bowls and see if that helps ya. oryon1033
This is what I do, and the bowl lasts over 3 hours with good flavor all the way through. Pack the bowl like a standard Tangiers bowl(See hookahwiki.com). When you poke your holes put a ring of large holes (toothpick sized) around the outer edge driving all the way to the bottom of the bowl, and then one more ring about a half inch toward the center in the same fashion. You can poke a hole in the middle, but I find it unnecessary. Then light three pieces of canary jap coals and keep them evenly spaced. If you don't get enough smoke use a windscreen for more heat, and if it gets harsh take the windsceen off. Best method I've used to far, and I've tried most of them. pauldavis
what size are those coals you use? i will have to try to make my nour coals the same size
[LB]
harshness would never be due to a bowl. Unless that bowl was such made of an extremely thick insulating material that didnt release any heat, but since tangiers bowl i know is not made of bedrock- than your coals are the problem, or if your hookah is really small

Joseph
A natural coal and a japanese coal of the same size will probably give you differant amounts of heat. I use fewer quicklights or japanese coals then naturals, and the naturals don;t last as long. Naturals just aren't as dense.
Sonthert
They do make it smoke generally better...and reduce humidity shock effects...but its still possible to smoke in adverse conditions and get bad results. You've never had a bad smoke until this one? Hoooly Messy Poopers, Batman!
