DizzyGuy
Ok... so I'm putting together plans to execute a project that I have in mind and to make it work right, I'll need something special... Ok, can any of yall out there cut a hole in a piece of glass? As in, in the middle? And maybe get the dimensions of the glass to be a specific size? Scalliwag
Depends on the size as long as it is not tempered I can do it.
DizzyGuy
Ok... so we're gonna say about a 1 1/2" - 2" diameter... Enough to fit my stargate stem thru.
PhatBeezie
What are you doing , puting 2 stems in one vase ?
DizzyGuy
No, that's easy and wouldn't require glass... I'm making a side table that will encase my Stargate... the stem will barely come out of the top so the ashtrey and the bowl will basically be right on top of the table.... putting glass under it so that it won't mess up the wood On each side of the Stargate and under it, I'm also gonna have storage space.... I'm thinking about adding a blacklight for the glow in the dark feature of the stem... either that or put some neons in the main part with the hookah
nuschultz
This sounds like a really cool idea. I want to see pictures when you are working on it.

Scalliwag
is the glass tempered?
DizzyGuy
I'll use what ever I can get... I don't have the materials yet... so if you know what kind of glass that you can get that you can cut, I'll be getting that kind
Scalliwag
cool, there is already a DIY method written up here. That saves me some time What you are doing is pretty common with hardcore aquarium folks. DizzyGuy
Sweet, you wouldn't happen to know of any places around you that sell that kind of glass, do ya? Once I get specifications, I'll let you give me an estimate and I'll send you the $$

Get a small sample piece to practice on. Remember the part about the water. I guess I don't need you warn you about not dropping the dremel. Use rubber gloves and eye protection when doing this bro. Those little glass chips are really small but they will eat your lunch. Even when you think you have it off your glove and get an itch or something, you better pick up a towel to scratch. NOw ask me how I know Take a plastic bottle of water and poke a small hole near the bottom on the side. Point the stream it so that it floods the area you are cutting. DizzyGuy
Well, my problem is that I don't have access to the tools right now, thus why I was seeing if I could contract someone on the forum to do it for me

Easy to work as long as you are careful. If you ever make linear cuts with a glass cutter the trick is to score it just ONE time. Most glass places will cut it to your spec though. Give me a better idea of what this is going to look like.

If the stem is going to come through this here is something to consider. It would not take much to break a non-tempered piece of glass. If you even wiggle the stem you will break the glass. So you will want to have it tempered. Check a local glass shop. They can do the whole process and deliver a finished product. If I was you I would rather make a table with glass panels between wood sections. Then have the stem come through the wood.
Scalliwag
Here is what I mean except with the would in the middle
DizzyGuy
Ah... Well, I was talking about having a regular side table... but just lay a piece of glass across the top... I got this idea from nice dresser that I have.... lemme draw up a quick pic to show you what I'm talking about... You get the idea... seperate piece of glass sitting on a table with a hole fitting through it... The glass won't be attached down, so I can slide it over the base if need be... i'm also not looking for an exact fit. Just something bigger than the stem with buffer. Scalliwag
that would be cool.
DizzyGuy
Granted... This isn't the whole idea, either. This is just a rough sketch... there will be more compartments/features to this as well
SanguineSolitude
i agree with scalli as someone who has worked with glass a little i suggest you put the stem through the wood instead. you could have just like a 3 inch wood section with glass panels to either side so you could still see the hookah. even tempered glass cant take much wiggle (unless its quite thick) and you will have to still take off the vase to change the water. i would suggest the wood which could look quite cool. DizzyGuy
It wouldn't have to wiggle... I'm not actually mounting the glass into the wood... It's a seperate piece completely... and now that you mention it, it would be kinda cool to see down into the case... but I think what I'm gonna do is make glass doors and throw a black light in there
rnreddyumd
Have youn considred using a sheet of acrylic. Much easier to work with than glass, decent clarity and I think its fairly scratch resistant(at least compared to lexan). It is probably pricier but I don't know the cost of glass. You can get it at home depot or even cheaper at mcmaster.com.
DizzyGuy
Ok... put a hot coal on acryllic... do you think that would work very well? I'm putting the glass on there not only because it would look better, but it's there to act as a barrier from the coal hitting the table
rnreddyumd
If the coal is there for only a few seconds then it shouldn't be a problem. If its there to long it would screw up the clarity, take a while to damage wood underneath. All you would need tool wise to do it is a drill gun and a serrated knife(like a steak knife or something). If decide to to use acrylic send me a pm and I'll give you more info.
