Onion
Found this link and I thought it very well may make a good DIY charcoal lighter since there seems to be debate about the price of torches, hotplates, ease of use, etc. Bonus - Making it involves drinking a couple beers! http://www.csun.edu/~mjurey/penny.html# Seems to be cheap to make, and they claim its relatively easy to construct (although I havnt made one myself). It apparently has the ability to boil over 2 cups of water, so would that be enough heat to light some charcoal? Also, make this at your own risk. I take no responsibility for someone using it in the living room and burning their house down. Not quite sure how safe it is for indoor use or how it could be made to be safe. Anyways, enjoy! Lukasa
That looks pretty sweet. I'm not sure i'm quite capable of making such a contraption though.

Calcartman
Honestly, i have a propane torch that cost me 14$ over at Ace hardware. The only cost after that is the fuel, and I have yet to refill it. Why go through the hassle?

The whole burner cost £10 and the replacement butane mix bottle costs £2.50 to replace?! Cheap as bloody chips! JD
DizzyGuy
well... this is a cool idea regardless of how cheap/good propane torches are... To each person their own... no need to knock someone who just wants to try the idea... If we knocked every idea that seemed bad, then do you think we'd progress as a whole as fast?
