OPR234
Well i got my QT (yep, another qt thread!) a couple days ago and had a 'christening' smoke session for it. But when I used the mya bowl it came with, it was harder to get the smoke going. I tried at first with a screen, but we could barely get it going and just used foil, which helped some. The clay bowl I used instead was more shallow, which i think helped. So my question is, what do I need to do differently with the mya bowl? Has anyone else gotten this problem? mushrat
Well, if its deeper, are you still filling it to the top? If you are leaving a gap between your screen and Shisha (which i do) it takes a little more heat to get it going because of the air space. If you are filling it, it will take more heat to get the larger mass of tobacco up to heat as well. Remember, you're heating the bowl itself and the air around the ma'asell for your smoke more than you are actually burning the tobacco itself. Try a little more heat than you are used to to get started, then try experimenting with scaling the heat back a little and see if it maintains. Also glazed clay and unglzed porciline are going to heat differently...
nuschultz
Agreed on all accounts. Start your coals on the rim to heat the bowl quicker.
Buford
I've never really had an issue with my Mya bowl, but it is indeed deeper than a typical bowl. I used to use 3 Kings, starting the whole coal at the edge of the bowl so it was off-center, and moving it around the bowl as it burned down, finally ending up in the center. With Nours I use two pieces about 1/3 of a stick in length, and also start at the edges. You do need to make sure the bowl is full so the heat is directly conducted from the coal to the foil to the underlying tobacco.
OPR234
Yeah i still had it packed up to the top, although it was a loose pack. Next time I'll try a coal and a half to start with. And mushrat, you said that glazed clay and unglazed porcelin heat differently, which i agree with. But what are the differences? By that i mean does one get hotter faster than the other, stay at a higher temp than the other, or maintain heat longer? I'm familiar with glazed clay bowls, but i didnt learn much about my Mya bowl because we eventually said screw it and used a bowl that we know smokes well. xpimpitox
my first experience with a mya bowl was last night. i found placin the coals on the edges for about 10 minutes then movin them in a lil closer worked wonders. i think nunu pointed this out but yea i 2nd that notion. i love the mya bowls BTW. small, deep, and have a unique style to them. EvansLight
The mya bowl is much deeper. I use 2 3Kings coals and they work perfectly. Use the screen, leave some space between like nunu said (damn my leave space trick for screens spread like wildfire ) and just pop on 2 3Kings or equivalent. Lukasa
I don't know whether I like the MYA bowl or not... it seemed to give me a fair smoke with AW A9, but it seemed like a short-lived smoke...

Sonthert
Anything will have its upside and downside, learning how to use it best is always the trick to anything new.
