Johnny_D
I now have an ample supply of both coals. Last night i had real trouble getting my bowl to start rocking on Natural's [My baby Hookah] When i switched to QL's It was much better. I use this : to get the coals going hot hot hot! [It's a butane Mix Gas] Any ideas as to how i'm ballsing this up? ZAP
Naturals do burn at a lower temperature than quicklites as they tend to be less dense so it will require a bit more than what it would seem.
Johnny_D
Thanks Zap I need to find a way to make the coals smaller as well, They are bloody huge!!!! Tried it with a knife last night, just made a lot of mess! JD
benny
Jonhneeeeeeeeeee *schwarzeneger voice* I Think that the Persian coals i reviewed (Zoghal Ghaleb) are the perfect solution, size and shape of quicklights, no nasty salt peter + sulfur to get it started (FYI Saltpeter + Sulfur + Carbon = Blackpowder) With that mighty torch (i have the same) it took < 1 minute, and the coals are the perfect heat (like a self lighter). further, they're concave inwards like a 3k coal on the foil side, so they actually stay alight, rather then goin out. By the way, easiest way to break the coal up neatly, is with a hacksaw

Skimo
Thats weird, when I got natruals I used about the same amount as I would with quicklights, I guess it depends on how thich and wide they are, but yeah try more untill you get it down
ioannisds
What I do to break up naturals is put the finger on a hard surface, with as much as I want broken off sticking out over the edge. Hold down the coal firmly, and tap the extended part with a hammer. Very easy, clean break, and little, if any mess.
Joseph
Well, finger coals such as Nour Finger coals are much easier to break then other naturals, like the romman naturals I typically use. I break mine with a knife, I have never had that much trouble.

pauldavis
the natural coals provide less heat than the quicklights...so you need to use more, i myself an thinking about going back to golden quick lights...i had good times with those
Joseph
I meant to say, Romman coals need a knife, finger coals break easyily and cleanly by hand. Now that I have some nour coals I will never go back to Romman Lemon Wood. Nour coals heat easier, break easier, and are just all around better. Sonthert
I use a screwdriver and hammer to break natural coals up. Another problem with natural coals is if they aren't lit all the way, they aregoing to produce less heat and go out. Try getting them hotter until there's a fine white dust on their surface. I like to heat the charcoal up for 10 minutes on a stove thats the only way to be sure it is 100% ready.
azcoyote
I split my finger type coal lengthwise by putting a 1.5" or so piece in the jaws of my bench vice. One can hear it crack as the vice is gradually tightened. Release the charcoal section. Most of the time I get two half rounds. These light quickly with a torch because the shape now has thin edges. The two pieces won't last as long as the whole, since more surface is exposed to the air. But they are much hotter, and once up to temp, only one half round is needed. It just covers the top of the bowl and I give it a quarter turn every so often to even up the heat. The coals burn better if the round side faces down. Guest LondonShisha
Are those natural coals the ones that come in long 'fingers', or the more authentic kind that come in various shapes and sizes? I've tried the former, but have no idea where to get the more authentic ones.
Joseph
Romman Lemon Wood Coals are probably what you mean by "more authentic" You can get them lots of places, although now that I havest= started using Nour finger coals I will never go back. I can break them by hand, and they light faster and burn hotter and last longer.
