Problems with phunnel bowl

Recommended Posts

hey

well, i got my phunnel bowl here now, too. but i still have some problems with it. i mostly use havana and cococha coal, you won't know it, i think. but it's got an similarly form to those japanese coals you use. i use not to pack the bowl like tangiers himself because i don't want to smoke that long, i use maybe something like ~15g of shisha with this bowl.

i saw that some of you use a foil pattern like this :

well, i tried it and it was ok. but with the normal large tangiers bowl, i get better results.

then, i tried it like this :

but it didn't really work at all ... i got the feeling that there should be no holes without coal over it or that too many holes are bad, but WHY? with the normal tangiers bowl, i use a foil pattern alike the one in the second picture, with holes everywhere (also in the middle), and it works great ...

hope you can help me to get a better result.

thanks already now.

and one more question to eric : what's going on with the woodruff flavor? :D

From what I read you need to have the bowl pretty full. If you want to use less shisha roll up some foil into an O and put it into the bottom of the bowl, then put the shisha on top and see how that works. I think the heat is going straight into the hole and the shisha is too low right now to get hot.

i dont fill it all the way up almost ever. but here is my foil pattern:

i then just rotate the foil around the bowl, and its worked perfectly for me every time :D

For me I use the first method if there's alot of people smoking (the 2 rings with hole in the middle) with 4 Japanese coals. If it's 3 or less people I use the method shown by EL. That way I can get away with only 2 coals.

no, not yours, i mean the second in my first post, the link doesn't work ...

i've got the feeling that there's less heat using this pattern, but with the normal tang bowl (which even has a bigger surface) it works great with the same amount of coal

what's GoD? sorry, my english is not so good and in germany, we don't have many people using this bowl, but the people using tangiers bowls love them ;)

Woodruff?

I looked into it and some companies with older references told me it was FDA GRAS (Generally Recognized as Safe). It has been reclassified and is not legal, it seems to be moderately poisonous. Coumarin was added to cigarette flavorings for years and is implicated as being one of the most dangerous additives to cigarettes.

The holes in the foil really don't matter that much...try a little more tobacco, next time. I like a hole dead center, over the phunnel, eases the smoke a little. Feel free to disagree....I punch holes in phunnel bowls just like a regular bowl...all over. Most of the are probably a waster of time, but I think aesthetically its important.

tried ELs setup now, with and without hole in the middle. no one works good :/

with hole, i don't get good smoke, i think there's too much air pulled with. without hole in the middle, smoke gets harsh and shisha burns ...
You might be underpacking the bowl, so when you suck, the foil is sucked over the phunnel, partially/totally sealing it.
if thats the case i would, if you dont want to use any more baccy, take a metal rod, the one that comes with alot of tongs works well, and just put it through a hole over the funnel, and rest its end on the side of the bowl, which will keep the foil off the middle :D

well, smoking right now and it works great. i poke holes everywhere, except in the middle. and i've got no holes without coal on it, i think i have to do it like that, because otherwise there's too much cold air pulled with ...

 • 2 months later...
I'm having problems with my new phunnel bowl too. I just can't get the smoke thick.

I'm using:
- A normal 28" Egyptian hookah (which smokes great with a standard bowl).
- Coconut charcoal fingers.
- Small Tangeirs phunnel bowl.
- Fumari shisha.

I've tried different hole patterns, using 1-3 pieces of coal, different flavors. All my grommits are nice and tight, the water level is right.

The only thing I can think of is that I'm not usuing enough shisha- I've been filling the bowl about 1/2- 2/3 full all around. I could fill it, but then I will be putting more shisha in than would probably even get smoked. I bought this thing because I thought I could use a normal amount of shisha and it would smoke longer, and be more flavorful? Was this assumption wrong? Do I really have to put 30g or more in at a time, or can someone suggest a new tactic? Edited by tingjunkie
