King Mo
that is a fantastic thing to buy. Perfect for jap coals. I put mine right on it with no probs at all. If I use other coals, such as instant light, i'd put my wind cover or something on top just in case the sparks kill my carpet in my room.
Sonthert
OK, put them directly on the coil. Know this, that the heat imbalance from lighting charcoal will shatter the element in time. I used a heavy duty commercial hot plate, its coils split and burst after two years. I got one that has the metal covers over the elements and I haven't seen (although I can't see them) a problem. I wouldn't worry about it...its what $20...use it for a year until the coils snap or it catches the house on fire (knowing WalMart).
DizzyGuy
I'm not too worried about ruining the coil... because hell, it was $8. If I can get half a year plus out of it, It'll be all good... but even less, it's still nice And the ash has a place to go underneath so that's cool too

Nothing like putting down in from of the TV with a hot plate and Hookah and enjoying a few bowls. I also paid $8 for my hot plate at Big Lots
