Review: The Rabbit Hole (Seattle, WA)

Recommended Posts

So after hearing JonnysGirl mention the Rabbit Hole in another thread, I decided to stop by after some Indian food with some friends last night. Overall, I liked the place; details below.

Atmosphere: Large area that looked like it used to be a furniture store. The neighborhood was decent too, something important to me (I'm a bit overprotective of my car after a bad incident in Seattle). Lots of squishy sofas and chairs; everything was nicely spaced out, which is nice so you can avoid everyone else's conversations. The music was a bit bland, but it could have just been bad taste by the employees that night...

Tobacco Variety: They had about every flavor you can imagine from Al Amir / Al Fakher / Layalina. I actually had a slightly hard time deciding because there were quite a few flavors I wanted to try but haven't gotten around to yet. I ended up with a mix of Al Amir white grape and blackberry; I was impressed as were my friends. I might have to pick up a tub of the blackberry as that flavor stood out in the mix as being delicious.

Hookah Setups: The hookahs were average quality single-hose Egyptians. They used large ceramic heads with foil and very nice Mya hoses (identical to my favorite hose at home!). They used finger coals and weren't stingy with them either; I'd venture to say they were Nour fingers by the shape (small divots on the bottom) and how they ashed, but I could be mistaken.

Price: The only bad thing about the place was the price. $15-$18 a head and $10 for seconds. Then again, everything in Seattle is way overpriced so I'm not sure why I was surprised. I was sure to ask tobacco brands before ordering because I sure wasn't going to pay that much for Al Waha or Nakhla.

Overall: I would recommend this place to anyone in the area. It's right near the heart of the U-District so there's lots of other things to do around there and some pretty good restaurants as well. I won't be going back to Zaina (another hookah lounge) after checking out the Rabbit Hole.

HA! I love the Rabbit Hole!! The prices are a little harsh but the hospitality is great! You have to try bubblegum banana split just for me! There is a tall skinny white guy that works there and his name is Issac, hes the best. Also, ask about the specialty hookahs and ask for the tropical one...OMG, you wont even know what to do with yourself, we were literally fighting over the hose.
There are still hookah lounges in Washington?  What about the smoking ban in indoor public places?
Thats what I don't get either but I'm glad they can pull it off.

I really need to meet up with you guys there sometime. Maybe we could plan this in the future.

They treat it as a private club to get around that issue. You have to "sign-in" when you get there and acknowledge the fact that smoking is taking place (or something like that, I wasn't really paying attention).

Yeah it is a private club....They have a "dont ask, dont tell" thing about the smoking ban! Most of the other hookah bars will be shut down because they are not smart enough....You have to show ID and sign in on your first visit...The state cannot do anything about it..Haha SUCKAS!

I was actually in Seattle last weekend, and didn't go to the rabbit hole or zaina, because I had read an article online that basically indicated there was no chance for them to remain open. I wish I would have called or driven by...

I did go to a Moroccan restaurant in Capital hill that was awesome called Mamounia. The food was awesome and they had bellydance performances starting at 7:00. It just made me want to fire up the hookah afterwards, but we were staying with my wifes sister, who really didn't like the idea. She's a little uptight....

Next time I will have to go to the Rabbit hole. I wonder if the private club option would work here in Eugene. The city has a ridiculous smoking ban in place as well. You could certainly open a hookah lounge, but if you sold any food or beverage at all you would most likely elimintate the 90% tobacco related sales requirement for exemption. Pretty much straight tobacco shops are the only option.
