HAHkoo
Has anybody tried using those chafing dish fuel things with like some sort of grill over it, to heat natrual coals? well i was just wondering because i have a bunch of these in my garage and the fuel is like jelly, and it smells as though it has no fumes. And is used around food so i think might give them a try.
EvansLight
ahh glorious sterno. I dont think it burns hot enough to fully light a natural coal, but you can try
HAHkoo
i will try tonight, yeah seems as though the flame burns like a candle.
Scalliwag
I have seen those but I am not sure how much heat they put out. If it is decent heat I would give it a shot. In a thread about the charcoal I made I brought up using a covered pot over a heat source to get the coals really hot, and when you take the coal out and expose it to air it will ignite pretty easily if it is hot enough. Keeping a fan nearby I have held a coal in front of it using tongs and had them going good really quick. So you may want to try different methods using the jelly burners. Some sort of little wire stand to sit above it is the first thing I would dig up.
HAHkoo
yes i am currently making a little stove out of a case from a computer power source im cutting slots to make a grill in which the coals can sit directly above the flame. i'll snap some pics later after my camera isn't trippin. I look forward to seeing that.
Macho555
Well, I've used them for catering type situations, and I'm thinking that they wouldn't be able to heat a coal all the way up....But maybe if you hold them there long enough, it would do okay. HAHkoo
so i've made my stove and im actually seeing if the coals will actually keep lit the whole way through.
Sonthert
Yeah, I think the stuff is designed to burn around 160F or something like that. Not hot enough for coals...take along time, at least. I really can't say. I'm like 65% sure, sterno wouldn't work.
Lukasa
I'm always wary of using weido-fuels to light coals... but give it a try. I always try to stick to butane or propane. Even though butane's a bastard gas.
