Johnny_D
Dearest Community, I am after some guidance. I notice that after my sessions that in the bowl is a very large amount of ash. In fact under the ma'assel is normally a grey layer of ash. Is this normal ? If it's not normal how do you guys combat the problem? Is it a problem? Thought & Comments welcome JD

Caramellanne
Yeah, use a thumb tack or something, even a needle would work but make more holes than normal because the smaller the hole, the harder it is to take a hit. Also, take your bowl off every so often and just blow through the back opening, it helps especially if your bowl starts getting too hot and it helps blow some of the ash back through the front. And yes, I have a lot of ash in my tray at the end of each session, sometimes I have to empty it half way through...Hope this helps!

I have been using (don't laugh) the end of a corkscrew to make holes. I am now thinking that the holes are WAY too big. Will find a needle or tack and just make more holes Thanks for the replies. I will try this at some point this week JD
Caramellanne
Hey no problem and yes, I think a corkscrew is WAY WAY too big...it allows way too much ash to fall through and taint your shisha...Bla and it tastes gross when it happens... bigmahlman
i like to use a .7mm mechenical pensil it works realy well, or a thumbtack whatever i find first. dont use .5 or .9 or you will have instant death.
cymptom
Ash getting into your bowl really shouldn't be much of a problem. I don't think there's anything in it that could affect the flavor, and I wouldn't worry about it affecting the way the shisha smokes. That said, and aside from the size of the holes in the foil, it could be the kind of coals you're using. Natural coals tend to have really dense ash, whereas Japanese style coals hardly ash at all. Caramellanne
Its funny how things can be so different from person to person....Different variables with different situations..its almost like hookah is a science experiment.
oryon1033
LOTS OF LARGE HOLES FTW! Why do you think mya's come with those tongs that have a big ass poker? Well thats what I use it for at least. But to each his/her own. I know Tangiers agrees with me on this one. And he kicks ass.
angemonkwj
i take a steak knife and start on the outer edge of the bowl and go in a circle. it's more of a slash in the foil instead of a hole, but it does the job and i dont have any ashin my bowl when im done. Donkeema
Also when changing coals just take your bowl off and blow through the bottom, mind you dont burn your lips but blow all the smoke out and then that should get rid of any excess heat and charcoal! imonlyapuppet
Every twenty minutes or so, get your tongs and pick the coal up off the bowl and drop it onto the ash tray, this will knock all the loose ash off and you'll have a glowing red coal on your bowl. This will mean less ash is able to get sucked into your bowl and taint everything. ..taint.
Sonthert
Don't worry about ash...all things must have their season.
